What can I rest my hard-drive on?

I want to try Windows 7 on my HTPC, only problem is both 3.5" bays are taken up and I need to put the OS on a separate drive. Seeing as the machine doesn't move (at all) I want to put the drive on top of the DVD drive but I know it's not a good idea to leave metal on metal.

I usually use a CD case but that's usually for short intervals, will a CD case be safe to keep in there on a permanent basis? I don't imagine it would get hot enough to melt the case but I thought I'd bounce my concerns off before doing it. What do you guys think?
 
Either way yr hard drive is gonna get very hot as there will be less airflow unless u somehow suspend it so as to have airflow above and below. Do u have eSATA? If so u can run a cable and leave the drive out of the case.
 
If there is a free 5 1/4" inch drive bay available just buy a hdd cooler and put it in there or a set 3.5 to 5 1/4" brackets.
 
I once had a HDD precariously balanced on two stacked CD-drive boxes with an anti static bag under the HDD.

IDE cables FTL.
 
Four plastic coke bottle tops could work as feet. This would allow airflow. Even better would be (for shock absorption) two pieces of foam that allows airflow and can cushion the drive.

Do you have to use a hdd cooler? Last time I needed to use a extra hdd I just fit it into the stiffy drive space, not for long though.
 
I don't like the idea of leaving a HDD on top of a DVD Drive - vibrations ain't exactly good for hard drives imo. I usually use CD cases/foam or anything else that would avoid the metal on metal contact and might act as a mini buffer.

He's out of 3.5" bays like the stiffy drive bay so the only option is to use a 5 1/4" drive bay
