Hi

I have only a minor idea what torrents are but I need some info
on how to go about it.
Specifically what South African websites can offer me.
How does it differ from Lime wire?

Please just direct me to an url that gives me all the info needed.

Well firstly you need to realise we cannot help you get any illegal content... you have to remember that too.
Limewire? Limewire is the source of three things: fake, illegal, and viruses...

First install a torrent client, uTorrent is light and easy. http://www.filehippo.com/download_utorrent/

Next find a site that tracks torrents, http://thepiratebay.org/, for example

Search whatever you are looking for, then download the torrent file, it will open in uTorrent and start downloading. Easy

Probably easier if you understand the torrent file doesn't actually contain the other files, just instructions on where to find them, since they are all over the place in small pieces.

Just remember that people will be connecting to your machine to download files as well, so close uTorrent down after downloading so you don't use up yor cap.
 
Torrent is a form of peer to peer file sharing, but what the torrent site hosts (torrent files) is not "illegal", and so most of said sites are not taken down.

Install uTorrent.

Go to torrent site (i.e. Google opentracker - legal torrents :p)

Search for what you want, and try and arrange the results with most seeders (uploaders) at the top.

Read comments to check for viruses.

Download torrent, double click and it will open in uTorrent.

Just remember, torrent requires uploaders, and uTorrent is default set to unlimited upload speed (I think). So you know where that bandwidth has gone if you have left uTorrent open "without downloading anything". :D

The difference between SA torrents and overseas ones are
1. The organisers tend to very anal, and want invitations (& donations) to download low quality stuff.
2. There are far fewer seeders and everything is slower.

This is not my experience at all. I have never had to pay for anything, and never been asked to donate. The mods and admins seem pretty level headed and easy-going... and I can often get a 350 to 700 MB in several hours with anywhere from 5 to 50 seeders. :rolleyes:

But then I have also uploaded several hundred Gigabytes. It helps if you share nicely.

That's my point though. They keep a check on your UL/DL ratio, whereas there are so many uploaders on the other sites, they don't care if you remove the torrent & data inbetween downloads.

It's a bunch of 21 year olds with big traffic cop syndrome peddling ****e that you don't want to download - even with your local local cap. The quality and quantity is crap and the anal "first rule of fight club" atmosphere is pervasive throughout - god forbid that you utter anything that can me misconstrued as criticism against these keepers of the free world ethernet. You are typically so busy trying to adhere to the myriad of ridiculous rules that it is possible to completely miss the fact that there is actually **** all of interest to download.

The typical scenario is as follows. End of the month. You need to use up your local bandwidth. You search the local torrents. You realise there is FA of interest. You have a brainwave. You sort the torrents by seeders. The most seeded torrent is House with 27 seeders. You don't like House. As a matter of fact, you're not here for a TV series stuff. The most seeded files after a TV series is the procreation of the endangered Redfur bird from Chile, 3 hours compressed into a glorious Xvid file of 240Mb at 300x160 resolution. With 2 seeders.

Bottom line: except for maybe TV series stuff and cum in my pants I'm a f*cking ninja blah blah blah, forget about SA torrents and use news servers.

Mmm... I thought the whole concept of P2P was that everyone involved takes a bit and shares it back to maintain the available file for the next person - maybe I got the wrong end of the stick then, 'cos if you're going to take your bit and not share back a decent ratio, then your firstly a H&R'er (which everyone despises), and secondly not contributing in the spirit of P2P?

Yes I agree there are sites that'll allow you to remove the torrent straight after your download finishes, but it has nothing to do with the number of uploaders - I think you've missed the point of P2P somewhere... I have some files I grabbed seeded for just gone a year, and yeah I'm still sharing them - there are no other seeders and requests were made, so I just left it seeding... 6GB file with a ratio of 79.9 - figure it out... :p

People will either use torrents or news servers - each has it's own pro's and con's, as do most things - to keep things freely available you need to understand what each method has to offer, and if you want to share it back if it's a torrent...


BTW - I don't use local torrents as they're mostly rubbish... HD Int all the way... :D

news servers work better here than torrents....don't waste your time. But tbh I lost touch after they shut down the couple that I used to visit occasionally....not that they were much good to begin with.

I can quite understand the attitude of moderators here though.....nobody has spare bandwidth, the ratio of seeders to leechers must be insane.
