Is that a good camera for a beginner? I am thinking of taking on photography as a hobby, but only want to buy a second hand camera at first, to see if Im any good, and to start of with. I will then advance to better cameras as I go along.

Thank you for your advice!

Well, I can get the above camera for R1000. I just want a digital camera with nice options to start off with, as I will have to learn all the settings and what not, and then later on progress to more expensive cameras as I get better.

So, maybe a 7 or 8 mp camera, for around R1000?

Well mp are great and everything, but they're not the be all and end all...

And honestly a P&S camera at R1000 is going to be v simple, and probably not have much in the way of settings. What a camera like that can teach you to get right is the composition of the photos you're taking.

At R1000 I would think almost any camera will do the job, but then I am thumb sucking since I don't have much experience in that area in terms of whats good and whats not.

Check out this guy's blog. He's an amateur photographer who started off the same way you mention, and has progressed to impressive levels. I'm certain that he'd be able to provide some informed answers, Niccia :) http://masterthelight.blogspot.com

Thank you Toxicbunny! Yes, I want to get something simple, so that I can get a feel of what I want to specialize in, like stils, nature, architecture etc, and then focus on that specific area. It doesnt help I get an expensive state of the art camera, and I dont know how to handle it. So rather start small and work my way up :)

I've got a Canon A5-something-or-other - not the most compact point and shoot but still great little cameras.

Have fun :)

If it gets bwana's seal of approval then its all good :)

I am prob looking at getting myself a decent p&s in the not too distant future as an addition to the large camera bag that never leaves my side....

Thanks Bwana, yes, I looked at alot of cameras, and that one seems to have stuck. I like the features, and the fact that it doesnt seem to difficult to operate. Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated!

He he! Well, I think maybe we must have a Mybb, photo competition, for beginners, intermediate and professionals, and the winner of each category gets gear :) Im so excited, I cant wait to go on my first photo shoot. Will just drive and stop if I see something interesting and take pictures :) Ill post some on my photo albums :)

The Powershots are all nice. Start by practising good composition - you can do that even with a cheapy camera...
