VOIP legal in SA from 1 Feb 2005!!

This is the most fantastic announcement since the mentioning of SNO
The implications are vast
I hope that means long distance carriers will offer cheaper calls within South Africa.

Wonder what sparked this suddern decision....
 
Probably the feeling that the SNO won't see the light of day for quite some time. The sector was supposed to have competition two years ago, and hasn't as of yet materialised. This implies that we are about 2 years behind where the DoC originally intended us to be and they're now desperate to get things moving, and fast... the easiest way to do this is to open up the market substantially, which they appear to be doing.
 
I get this warm and fussy feeling inside... I can't help but think that this community had something to do with it. After all the writing to political parties (and Carte Blanche), the government has realized that the public is unhappy and willing to stand up.

I know the fight is not over and this doesn't really mean much for broadband, but at least it feels as if we are making progress.
 
With my connection to Aerosat, I will be able to use VOIP, and it will cost me nothing.

I really hope that the SNO will become a reality and not become a distant dream like everything else. As for VOIP, this is a possibility to bring prices down... provided Telkom is reasonable with the interconnection rates to VOIP providers.
 
I think the interconnection will be regulated so Telkom will not have much say over pricing. Regardless of whether or not the SNO drags its feet VoIP provided by VANS will definitely cause Telkom to drop some prices in the medium term unless Telkom wishes to lose a lot of customers.
