Basically I am talking not so much about the relationship stuff (I think most of my peer-group experience 'puppy love') but more about drinking.

I basically quite a good boy (19 now) and about to start university. I have been to a few house parties, but never ever got drunk (mostly because I don't feel the need to lose control of my body/ my maximum I've ever drunk has been 3 beers I think and I mostly drive to the house parties) and have never engaged in smoking, whether it be weed or just a simple cigarette. I never tried to get into a club underage - mainly because I've never had the inclination to do it.

When I turned 18, it was kind of weird because now I could go to clubs etc yet I have only been like 3 times this entire time. I really don't like clubs. Most of the so-called socialites go to these clubs to socialise, yet the "socialising" that goes on is of a very empty standard. You buy a beer, say hello to one or two of your mates, dance for a while and then maybe kiss some girls. I'll admit it - I get bored. I really don't understand the attraction of getting as drunk as a dog, 'chundering', having a hang-over and then forgetting about it all the next morning! I am a bit of anti-conformist and mostly reject peer-pressure. I feel no inkling to 'be cool' or 'fit in' with a group because surely if they are your friends, they'll accept you for who you are instead of what they want you to be?

I think 'the problem' (if you can call it that) is that I am a big introvert. I observe lots of things, but don't say it to all and sundry. In my friends group, I have about 4 friends who don't go to clubs at all (and drink in moderation ), 2 that sort-of-drink but don't go to clubs, and 3 club regulars (who get p!ssed quite often I imagine). I am not really a people's person and am not that comfortable in social situations, but I really think using alcohol to temporary 'fix' the 'problem' is very short-sighted.

I honestly would much rather read a good book, watch a DVD, browse the internet in the evening than 'hit' a club. It just seems so futile to me. A big waste of money that I would rather use to start a business or something like that. :)

I suppose the point I am getting to is this: Are you at a disadvantage socially if you don't do all this stuff?

Ur going to get some stick here i reckon,
But from my point of view you are not at a disadvantage. If its not you, then its not you.

Personally i love going out, i have toned down my drinking and substance use quite alot, but i have never really regretted anything, and would definitely feel like i have missed out if i had not done these things...

Being social with my friends around a pub table or in a club etc is for me a great night, maybe its not ur thing! It might change with varsity however, i saw and brought alot of ppl out of their shells. I would strongly advise you to stay in res for the first year, i think u would miss out alot if u did not. There is something very primitive and yet completely enjoyable about a troop of guys and girls going out as a formidable group and having fun/drinking/partying....

Give it a chance and make an effort, u might enjoy urself and make some lifelong friends in the process. And if not, at least u will regret nothing...

I never did any of the staqndard teenage things ; I think I missed out :/

i agree with you, except for this "reading" you speak of, i have tried quite a few things out of interest but once or twice. clubs dont make any sense to me, once in a few a months is ok but the i dont get why people go every weekend.

Yeah I know I'll get some stick, but what the hell? :p

I applied for res but was refused. (Even though I got an A aggregate) In fact UCT basically don't allow white people who live in Cape Town to go into residence. Maybe I'll try second year! The thing that (sort of) concerns me is that around 85% of my grade do this sort of thing regularly. But I suppose with university I'll meet a wider variety of people :D.

I'll try and give it a shot, but I am doing quite a tough university course so won't be able to go out much.

Yeah, I am not that judgemental so I was wondering what the massive attraction is/was. I personally think it is quite over-rated  but I am not going to 'condemn' people for being a great clubber. That is just stupid - different strokes for different folks. I do find it amusing, however, how some 'good' people (until matric) have suddenly become wild party-goers/drunkards. I mean one of my friends said he doesn't use a 'designated driver' system because the person doing the driving will feel left out if everyone is getting smashed around him...

I like things that make a sort of contribution. I mean I've already checked out the UCT societies I want to join :o. I also intend on playing squash and tennis there (socially).

Nope there is nothing with it at all, as long as your not the type of person who gets lonely. If you can entertain yourself then awesome.

Finding a g/f might not be to easy if you never go out. That might be the only downside, then again finding a g/f at a party is not always that easy either :).

I went clubbing for a very long time and wasted so much cash on booze and party enhancers that now i never want to go to a club ever again.

Thats jsut bizarre that res was refused......Have u tried numerous Res's??? I would avoid a a commune though....they tend to get....out of hand.

So what if 85% do it? Does not mean anything really? I have managed to find a healthy balance i think, i definitely go out once a week and see my friends etc (not everyone ends up with us out of our minds though) and i find its a nice way to end the week. But then again i have other friends who prefer to get together and roleplay/lan etc... Different strokes. Just try keep an open mind, regret is something u dont want when u are 30..

varsity is as tough as u make it really, they usually give you ample time to do everything and still be social. I managed to stumble my way through elec engineering, work promos, play sport and party like a maniac. Do ur work when u get it, and enjoy ur free time when u have it.

and then maybe kiss some girls.

This is the part I missed out on

This is the part I initally missed out on, but have caught up

Well I do get lonely sometimes, but not that often - as I said in my previous post, I was quite busy at school doing extra stuff for it. Funny you mention that about the gf - I've had a (sort of) wish for a girlfriend since the the middle of last year although I knew I couldn't get one last year. However hopefully that situation will change with university :p

Indeed, i could have purchased a damn nice car....and the clubbing thing seems old now (its just not like it was, picture the scene from human traffic... ) but i still get the odd inspiration!!

You don't seem to get any joy out of speaking to somebody you've never spoken to before.

So, you don't actually want to be in a situation where people gather to do exactly that.

But, people have an affect on other people, you need to be affected by as many different types of people as you can, because, simply put ... most of the time, people are awesome, and they will enrich your life as you will theirs. It's only the few who are off.

And, then there's the adventures you can have with these new and strange and possibly exciting people ... man oh man ... sometimes 2 quiet peeps get together and the plans they come up with ... they can TAKEOVERTHEWORLD!

But, you've got to stay out of situations that make you too uncomfortable, and at the same time, push past the situations that make you slightly uncomfortable.

So, in short ... yes, you are missing out. But you're missing out on the bad stuff as well.

I don't think you missed out. If its not your scene then it makes no difference really. As long as when you are older and look back, you can say that you did things YOU wanted to do, and that you were happy doing them you'll be just fine :) ...

I sometimes think I missed out on the chilled, calm side of life. Getting drunk, smoking it up, jolling, partying has also made people miss out. Conversations with friends from 14 - 18 pretty much started with "dude howzit, good? good... tequila? sure. Bar? there."

good lord!!

speak of the devil and she shall arise!

So Chris

I guess your still a virgin ?
Nothing wrong with it. Everything comes with time. Take your time and enjoy life the way you want too. Don't let other people make you live the life they are living.

funny, and i never saw your "speak to kitten" post until now.

but I really think using alcohol to temporary 'fix' the 'problem' is very short-sighted.

there's where your problem is. you see all drinking as "a temporary fix for some kind of problem".

Just because you go out and have a few drinks, even a lot - doesn't mean you have a problem or are looking for a fix.... I loved going out, wasn't drinking away ANY problems - just had fun.

you are asking whether you are missing something from your life if you don't get p1ssed or whatever, having a hangover/etc... well, you wouldn't know, would you now, because you haven't at least tried it. (getting sloshed and not worrying so much...)

maybe it's for you, maybe not - only you can decide that, but only AFTER you went out one night, after a massive party of fun & drinking/etc.

Don't judge the clubbing crowd, just because you don't understand it....

Agree i prefer playing a game watching a dvd etc... but sort answer yes you're missing out. I've made sure that i had a few big nights/days/weekends at varsity it was very few can count it on one hand but it was huge and i'll NEVER EVER forget it in my entire life EVER... crazy sheat can happen if you really really want it to :p
