Currently, who would you rate as the worlds best defender?

David Beckham is the worlds best everything.

Vidic at centre, Evra at left back, Ramos at right back

I think Ramos has lost the worlds best right back tag now. That tag belongs to Dany Alves.

at this point in time? or Worlds best ever?

For worlds best EVER - since I've been watching soccer - I would say Paolo Maldini
At the moment? I think Vidic is a strong contender...

You're probably right, given current form (which you did ask for :D ) but I was thinking more long term.

Maybe Canavaro?

Maicon also deserves a mention as the worlds best right back. Having a brilliant season.

Vidic centre, Alves at right and... hmm... left? Not sure, but I doubt Evra is the best. Will go to check out who is vyingfor that position currently.

I agree on Vidic.

Who to partner him?

Randhir
29-01-2009, 02:53 PM
No partner. Vidic in the middle by himself is fine :D

Maybe Puyol?

How would u guys rate Rio's season?

Randhir

He is having a good season, but Vidic is having an absolute stormer. Add that to his back problems... Also, he is a good leader.

Maicon for rightback. Lahm for left back. Vidic and Walter Samuel as the centreback pairing. That would be my world's best defense.

Yeah definitely Vidic, right back I'd have Daniel Alves and if the team was attacking orientated, def Evra. Other CB would be Puyol or Ferdinand.

Ever - Maldini (and he's still going!)
Now - Vidic.

Many including most on goal.com consider Maicon the best in the world. He's being in fanastic form this season.Stefan9 would back me up on this.

As far as offensive play goes there's not much between the two. but maicon is the better defender. Hence why maicon is the first choice rb for brazil while alves gets shoved into either the rw or lb spot for them.

This season Maicon is second in both goals and assists at Inter. Only ibra has more of both than maicon.

People here probably see Alves more since I get the feeling posters around here watch more la liga than serie a. That's why maicon is soo underrated.

Vidic and Puyol for me. Ferdinand hasn't had enough game time this season to prove himself as a world great, but he's proven to be consistently solid for many years now which makes him worthy of a mention. John Terry is also an asset to any defence and I'm surprised that I'm the first to mention him.

There are so many other contenders from today's game and that of yesteryear:

Roberto Carlos
Nesta
Franz Beckenbaur
Ricardo Carvalho
Jaap Stam
Marquez
Cannavaro

All great defenders in my book and worthy of every praise they receive...

roberto carlos is worthless:)

roberto carlos is worthless lmao! so I'm not the only one who says that :D

Rio IMHO is riding on Vidic's golden coattail he simply has to mop up loose balls that Vidic creates... he's had good moments but nothing great to be considered one of the best.

Giorgio Chiellini also deserves a good mention for the last few seasons he's had

Why is Cannavaro rated so highly? He was lucky to win world player of the year of the year considering that Thierry Henry made it to the champions league final and the final of the world cup in that same year and was in blistering form for Arsenal in the league.

Pity after moving to Real he's forrm dropped below his usual standards :(

Never rated him that much. He only really became brilliant two seasons ago. Before that he was immature and just generally urgh....
