Transfer of XP license

Hello all

My dad wants to transfer his XP license from one computer to another. He has no use for the computer that currently has the XP license, and he doesn't want to pay for another Windows license. Can it be done, and what steps would you take?

Depending on what type of license it is, he should just have to take windows off the existing PC and put it on the other PC using the existing license. If Microsoft has a problem and say activate by phone, do so and tell them that you have switched the license from one computer to another.
 
You are not allowed to do that with DSP licenses, they are tied to the computer that it was originally installed on. But I have managed to still get it activated. I just tell them that the motherboard died and I had to do a complete replacement, but it is still the same computer (and it was since I used a lot of the old parts). They will make you speak to a representative and she will ask you "is this the same computer?", and you just answer "yes". She will then allow the activation.

If it is a retail license then there is no problem.

Agree 100% on this advice as I have had to do the same when I was working in a PC store.

Are DSP licenses the same as OEM ones :confused:

Yes, they don't use the term "OEM" anymore. They are the ones that come with a PC. MS does not support them by their Phone-in support. They are supposed to be supported by the Hardware dealer or manufacturer... good luck with that. They are the cheaper versions that you buy from Matrix and other computer dealers usually with a new PC. It is the only kind I buy, since I don't need MS support. I can find all I need on the internet.
 
So the only two differences are :

a) No telephonic supprt
b) Not transferrable

?
