Customers help operators to carve network of the future
Internet Protocol (IP)- Multi- Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) networks was the "golden thread" fuelling the growth of communication technologies in South Africa's dynamic enterprise environment, Reuben September, Telkom's Chief Technical Officer said, said at SATNAC yesterday.

"A converged, multi-service platform that delivers features and content-rich applications are now on the market. It helps companies deliver services to customers in a real-time environment. This is what customers want. Telkom's Next Generation Networks (NGN) implementation plans are steaming ahead and will enable Telkom's network, with soft switch capability, to be an increasingly robust high speed transport network with the most appropriate access technology platforms."

Telkom's technology enables corporate customers to run applications - including multi-media traffic- in a secure environment backed by service level guarantees on performance and service availability. Telkom's solution called VPN Supreme is based on a carrier-class broadband IP network. VPN Supreme offers end-to-end integrated IP-VPN solutions with Quality of Service, based on Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS).

September said Telkom's network expansion had increasingly focused on the deployment of Internet Protocol (IP) rich infrastructure through integration into the current network, as well as the use of new technologies. IP was increasingly becoming the foundation of customers' networks, enabling different networks to be linked through a common protocol and converged at the service level to reach anyone from anywhere at any time, September said.

Telkom's MPLS solution, for example, was offering customer flexibility in their networks to prioritise applications, including the ability to integrate voice, data and video applications. Telkom's investment in its network over the past six years is now paying dividends, as customers are able to run high-level applications with advanced functionality.

Nombulelo Moholi, Telkom's Chief Sales and Marketing Officer, said customers were not interested in adopting new technologies as much as they were concerned about receiving the best services for increasingly complex applications and the ability to have visibility of their service as it impacts on their daily business operations.

<b>"Telkom, and other network operators, need to offer customers affordable, adaptable solutions that gives them a competitive advantage in their landscape. This is the challenge in a deregulated market," Moholi said</b>

SATNAC (the Southern African Telecommunications Network and applications Conference ends to morrow (Wednesday) at Stellenbosch. It is the telecommunications industry premier event that each year reviews progress in applied research in the ICT sector.

Methinx the old adage 'the proof of the pudding is in its eating' applies to any marketing-speak emanating from the likes of Telkrap...

Gee - straight after the "market survey" - Teklom marketing strategies at their all time best. I love the statement : "IP was increasingly becoming the foundation of customers' networks," - was this written 3 years ago ?

LOL.

It would be a good idea for them to listen to their customers' needs, after all, what is the point of any company if you don't provide products and services to suit your customers. Telkom has a lot of potential and if they do things right they can definitely improve their image.

Basically what it says is looky here we spent so much on our network and everything is geared for good speeds and sla's but in actual fact they never produce the pudding.

Proud South african rip offs.

Well no, they're perfectly capable of delivering high speed, reliable internet. It just doesn't pay them to do so.
