Larger HDD : more noise and heat?

Was just reading another forum about internal HDDs on media streamers (MViX, TViX, Popcorn etc) and quite a few suggest a smaller HDD in the device due to heat/noise.

Do the larger drivers make more noise?
 
They do? :confused: I have a large drive in my external and I can barely hear it. It also doesn't make much noise. A friend of mine has an MVix and I've never heard it or felt it getting warm either.
 
A smaller hard drive produces less heat because the internal platters are smaller. The overall mechanics are smaller and can be spun at much higher RPM's than a larger drive for the same amount of heat.

It was a question ... and one that seems to be backed up by most - other than you and your friend of course :P

Let me answer it then in this way. Of course anything bigger makes "more noise" and probably more heat. But the question is, how much? The answer is somewhere between "not much" and a negligible percentage. I borrowed the MVix for quite some time and it never got hot or made much noise.
 
Also, aren't some of the big >1TB drives using 2 platters instead of 3? This could potentially mean that they create less heat than perhaps a 750GB with 3 platters?
