Hey guys i recently bought a quad core q9550 and it came with the intel g31 board.I was wonderin if anyone with this set up or similar has tried overclocking it.Can someone explain how to do it.I know its not a good board to oc but im sure i should get some performance boost.Im running transcend 800mhz jetram with stock intel fan n a rear exhaust fan if that helps.Tips or guides will be greatly appreciated.

Afaik you cant overclock an intel branded board via the fsb, not sure about core i7 though. You may want to try a bsel mod, though its very risky

Maybe so but you can get maybe 400-600 mhz out of it, so while it may not be great for heavy overclocking it can overclock. Now for the same money would you rather have a mobo that cannot overclock or a mobo that can for the same price?

It's like buying a new car with crap hubs when for the same money you can get chrome mags :p

Overclocking is fun and all but you really don't need to worry too much about it with that CPU - it's pretty snappy as it is.

its a msi board and it does support overclocking via fsb.The bios has a seperate menu called cell menu dedicated to overclocking. The fsb and ram frequency can be adjusted the only problem is i cannot change voltage. What i was aiming for from this thread was if someone could tell me what would be the best multiplier by fsb setting for stock voltage is and memory ratio.I know this board isn't great for overclocking but it came with the cpu n case.

A BSEL mod is as risky as picking your nose! :D

Haha its not risky at all unless u dont know what u doing but that goes for everything.

If you cant change the voltage, I can recommend some BSEL pin mods for volt increases

Why would you mix a handsome lord with an ugly peasant. I think the G31 chipset motherboard was my worst decision even when I was able to overclock it. Got my E6550 from 2.33Gto 2.8GHz but the mobo killed my ethernet, even though prime95 showed it being stable, so I clocked down to about 2.66GHz.
