Is it just me or is internation flying on the 256k packages today. I am getting 20k on my bit-torrent download. This is the first time ever I have seen this! (i get lots from suprnova.org)[:D]

So today I am getting my moneys worth!
 
It's you.....

I'm getting MAX 16KB/s on my 256k package..and that's with 30 threads. Now this isn't server friendly, so it's not something I like or should have to do.

its not just you, im on 512k and since last night my bit torrents are averaging 35-45kb/s with spikes up to 60-67kb/s... definatly my monies worth, but Im not getting excited just yet...

Hell, my gran on a scooter with a memory stick is faster than Sentech's MyWireless!
 
You shouldn't use a torrent to judge whether you're getting your money's worth, because torrents open lots of connections each going at a snail's pace. Rather do a single thread download from an intl ftp site.

Anyways, 20KB/s on a 256K is hardly what you're paying for...some where you're still loosing round about 12KB/s which is almost 2x ISDN connections!!!

nonroker, true, but this has been the first time I've seen my old speeds (sort of) in longer than a month... used to get max 19kb/s and average round about 14...

Hell, my gran on a scooter with a memory stick is faster than Sentech's MyWireless!

That on my sucktech connection.

The same site from my friend's 2MB IS leased line he get's 190KB/s

But when I open 30-40 connections to the site on my sucktech connection I get round about 16KB/s

Downloading Torrents stalls my connection - starts at 6KB/s, gradually drops to <0.1KB/s, then stops. Then again, I'm on the 128 connection, and I think it's the 256k user's turn to get the bandwidth.
 
It's one of Sucktech's "clever" bandwidth sharing solutions - they give you a day or two of great connectivity and then it sucks for a week. When you get the great connectivity again, you are so happy, you forget about the bad service you had for a week before that [:D] - they rotate thier use base in this way, so not everyone is experience good bandwidth at the same time, because they don't have enough to supply thier current tiny user base.

When all of Joburg goes on holiday in December it will be interesting to do speed tests then. [:p]

For me, streaming audio has been consistent this past week.

well..something's just gone horribly pear shaped
my 40 connection ftp suddenly dropped from 16KB/s to 2KB/s

Mondays, tuesdays and wednesdays are 128K days.
Thursday and Friday is for the 256K.
Saturday is 512K's turn and then sunday sucks for everyone.

The first time you connect to the Internet with your all-new ADSL modem, you may find that you are not surfing or downloading at the rate that you had hoped the connection would give you. This guide will hopefully help you to optimize your broadband connection.

Maybe you are unsure as to what downloading speeds you should be getting. Well, if you have a 500Kbps connection, you should be getting close to 60K/s when downloading. This does depend greatly on the site you are downloading from, but I have generally managed to obtain decent download speeds of 57-60K/s.

If you work it out: 500000 / 8 = 62500 (62.5K)

So 60K/s is pretty good really. In fact, the actual reason that you could never obtain a true 62.5K/s download is because of transfer loss. This can be as much as 13%. TCP/IP loss can be up to 3% and the rest is ATM loss, which can be up to 10% (ATM = a protocol for transferring data between two points).

If you're not getting this sort of speed then it is probably because your RWIN and MTU settings are incorrectly set for broadband optimization. There are other reasons of course, such as contention, but incorrect optimization is the most probable."

So with a 128 you should be getting 13.9KB, 256 = 27.8KB and so on.

I agree tho, you shouldn't be using bit-torrent downloads as a guide, it should be off a dedicated site
 
On Friday I fired up 3 torrents, shareaza and dc++. Everything seemed to be connecting ok, so I packed up and went to Woodstock. When I got back home, 48 hours later, I eagerly checked my bandwidth monitor stats. I was still connected, no disconnects. But it turned out I downloaded 200MB in that period. Which works out to about 4 MB an hour.

Someone phoning me and reading out 1's and 0's would probably transfer faster than this crap.

Well today is Tuesday, so it should be a 128 day. I'm downloading a 1.4G file intl with Getright. I've been watching it for more than an hour now and the average is about 3.5 KB/s. Every now and then it peaks at 8 & 10 KB/s but only for a very short while. And then it goes down to 2 and even 1 KB/s. At this rate it will take me more than 100 hours to download this file. So much for Broadband. Broadband se gat.

Tower 50 giving me 10.6kB/s on international using DownloadPlus (4 sessions) and 12.8 local ftp (FileZilla) from I.S.

128k package
 
Tower 50 right now giving me (after modem upgrade)

10.0kB/s on international using DownloadPlus (4 sessions) and

local 13.7kB/s peak with 13.0kB/s average ftp (FileZilla) from Internet Solutions
 
Is anybody else getting these fantastic speeds for 128, or am I the only one that has this problem? It's very cool that some people get decent speeds, but that doesn't help me one iota. I get crap speeds. I have been monitoring this download for more than 4 hours, and the average speed is below 4KB/S. This is worse than dialup, and dialup is not broadband and it will never be.
 
Clive, No and No. Local is OK, intl is around 4KB. I would *guess* this apply to most of us, except keithr of course. Only times I see 8+ on intl is before 7:00 AM on weekends

No you're not the only one, my international seems to average about 4 KB/s or so, and varies from about 8KB/s when at its best, down to about +/- 2.5KB/s sometimes. This makes some tasks very time-consuming e.g. to 'Windows Update' a machine for a client, and time=money. (And you can't use multi-thread d/ling for WU, nor does squid help because MS's f* WU client always does 'refresh' GETs. I anyway refuse to use multi-thread downloaders because the connection is <i>supposed</i> to work properly 'as is' with normal single-threaded downloads).
