GTX 285 much better than the GTX 280 or just abit.

Hi all

Just want everyones opinion.

Is the GTX 285 that much better than the GTX 280?

I know is its 55nm and less power/heat but is it any better performance wise?
Im not going to to be looking at any other cards. Its only going to be one of these.

Here's the thing, i can get them at

GTX 285 at R5000
GTX 280 at R4300

So is there enough performance increase in the 285 from the 280 to justify 700 bucks?

Rather get the 4870/4870x2. More bang for the buck, or wait for the 4890. Sheesh guys, keep up, ATi is rocking up 2008 and 2009 :)

Im not nocking the ati cards but i will be only looking at the 280 and 285.

My main question is, is R700 worth getting the 285 over the 280? Is there enough improvement from the 285 to spend the extra 700 bucks.

Hmm I also can't find a 4870x2 for anywhere close to those prices.

I do not believe that it's worth R700 for the difference between the GTX 280 and 285. I'd go with the GTX 280 and maybe go SLI sometime in the future.

In short yes.

Look at it as a revamped 280. Remember, drivers still need to mature for this card. In 6 months, this card should be anywhere 10-20% faster.

Personally, I like the 4870X2. A recent HardOCP review showed how financial astute the purchase of a card like this is. Very dependent on crossfire profiles though.

You lucky ATI is doing well this time. The 285 would have not been around and the 280 would have cost R7K...

Yup i think its worth the 700 bucks, i mean if your going to drop 4.3k you may as well drop 5k. I also do not feel though that spending another 2 or 3k on a 4870x2 makes sense because there are not many games the 285 cannot play full.

Yea the funny thing is nvidia are now the cheap ones and ati once again are being stupid and charging more for their 4870x2, instead of market share they want to rip us off like nvidia does when they are on the top but the difference is nvidia have the market share.

If Ati sold the 4870x2 for the same price as the 285 it would rape nvidia, yes those crossfire profiles would put me off as well, having to wait for ATI to be able to play games with both cores would annoy the hell out of me.

I know you are not interested in the 4870x2 but HD 4870 X2 2G GDDR5 PCI-E DUAL R 5,099 www.pcint.co.za for that price you should consider it as it does put the 285 to the sword and that is an amazing price for it.

add on 14% onto that R5099, and you looking at abour R5900... not exactly ideal :p
 
Scotty for 1k extra your getting almost double the frames man, i am not an nvidia supporter or ati but if i have 5k to spend i would rather put in another 1k and get that card.
 
Just make sure you have a decent LCD for the card, its pointless getting a high spec card with a crap monitor. You gotta run High Def to really enjoy the performance of the card!
 
Thanks to everyone's reply's im going with the gtx 280 to save money.

It should do me fine, a bunch of new cards will be out in a year i will look at up grading the gpu then.
