Non graphics card in cross-fire slot?

Can I use the second slot (usually used by cross-fire or SLI) on a motherboard for a non graphics card?
e.g. can I get a cross-fire motherboard, put a single graphics card in the primary graphics slot, and put a raid controller in the secondary graphics slot? Will the mobo crap itself? Will everything work?
 
Should still work, although where do you get a PCIEx16 RAID controller from?

You can use the slot even though it would be your graphics card.

I'd use a PCI-e 4 or PCI-e 8 card.

The PCI-e slots are supposed to be backward compatible (so a 1x card can run in a 1x, 4x, 8x and 16x slot; a 4x card can run in a 4x, 8x and 16x slot, etc)

Ja, they're supposed to be backward conmpatible, but I want confirmation that in a cross-fire or SLI scenario, the second (or third or fourth) graphics slot isn't dedicated to graphics card usage only.

I can gurantee that it will work, it is not specifically only for SLI or Crossfire.
