Anyone with less than 15% stable signal should NOT install the new firmware. The newer version has a "feature" that will cause your connection to drop every few minutes, and search for a stronger signal (which doesn't usually exist). So if you get 10% signal (like me), it will constantly drop your connection and look for another tower, meaning endless disconnects.

Well done Sentech! Surely it could have been intelligent for IPWireless to make sure that it searches for all available towers, selects the strongest one, and stays on it? And for Sentech to be recommending this update to it's users is a SPECTACULARLY bad idea.

EDIT:
If you've already updated and it's working properly, just leave it. If not, download the previous version of the firmware (search for "download firmware" on this forum) - you may need to remove the 'za' from 'unrealza' to get the download to work - and run the file once it's downloaded. Then, start the dialer software and click the "Upgrade to firmware version xxxxx" button - you may need to do this several times. The first time I did this, the modem refused to connect giving whatever random error it felt like spouting. The helpdesk recommended reinstalling the modem firmware - and for once, their advice worked.

Wow, better speeds and a more worthwhile helpdesk! Pity they shat all over their new parade with bad firmware.

ummm, my signal is at 6% (with new FW) and doesn't disconnect all the time.

Please mommy make the bad man stop. (Bad Man = Sentech)

6% - that's pretty low.

Still, my modem is now under my desk on top of me smoothwall next to my switch - 2 lights, 10% signal never noticed any difference at all between that and having it by the window with a pringles can on it getting 20% signal.

Windy days I have to take the modem for a walk back near the window tho - haven't had the modem long enuff to see what happens during a heavy thunder storm ! [:D]

But then, my location is pretty much perfect for wireless connectivity - very few high trees on top of a hill near randburg. Line of sight to Hyde Park and Randburg Metro.

I am downgrading NOW. But then again, Aparantly the Helderkruin tower was "optimized" at around the time that the signal disappeared (2.6 km away). Then I managed to connect to Horizon View. That is now gone. (My guess is that they "optimized" that tower as well) Now I get something resembling a signal from Helderkruin again. The signal strength varies between 0 and 9% the WHOLE FRIKKEN TIME. I do not want an expensive modem that does random "disco lights" best.

Well my signal is significantly higher then most here and what I did notice was before when I had perhaps one disconnect every few days I now get one a day... but then with Sentech that could be anything.

myWireless 128, 64, 48, 16 - depends on its mood.

Hmmmm... Downgrading did not make it any better for me. But today I managed to connect to Horizon View again, so now the signal is stable again on 2%, much better! hehe.. Sigh.
