Tata Nano launched in April

I was under the impression that it had already been launched in India. Would not want to see it on local roads though.
 
Replacing "unsafe" motorbikes with cars is STUPID! It's exactly the opposite of what transport planners are trying to achieve = less cars on the roads = less congestion = less pressure on an already overcrowded road network.

These things are legendary, sure there a death trap on wheels, but look at the VW Beetle 1938 and BMC Mini 1959. There cheap as chips, tinny and cost next to nothing, all we need now is a hippies culture, tree hugging lovers, the earth type of person (Hollywood or Bollywood) to fall in love with them and they will be all around us like the Toyota Prius.

Unless there have been fantastic advancements in motorbikes that I've missed bikes are still regularly equipped with engines about the same size as this tata and its [two as opposed to four] riders are still exposed both to the elements and to the unique perils of the road as experienced by bikers.

Sorry but as far as I'm concerned motorbikes arent the solution either - mass transit is. Still, this Nano seats four (or maybe 2+2) plus a bit of shopping and would be perfect as a runabout. Of course if it was ever to grace our shores expect Tata to fall in line with the other manufacturers and price it accordingly. :mad:

Get a Citi Golf and you die in 70's style, or a Uno and die in 80's style, or a Corsa Lite and die in 90's style.

Seriously - why do some makers keep on selling old crap in SA? Why don't they import the cheaper super-mini classed cars sold in Europe to SA? Like the Lupo/Fox and the Agila ?

Or buy a E46 BMW and die in 2000's style. If it's your time to go, you will die, never mind what you drive.

Back on topic- the Nano is damn ugly. Imagine the congestion that will be caused by all the additional cars on the road.

Actually a lot of bikes have larger engines :D
And I'll bet you dollars to donuts that that [-]piece of indian schit[/-] tata can't do 340km/h either. Not even if you drop it out of an airplane.
 
But will the car manufacturing cartel allow the nano to be sold for cheap?

I think it'll go for R60k+ just to protect the industry. :rolleyes:

A friend of ours showed us pictures of car factories from over the world - and the storage space is chock and block full of cars as the market for new cars is extremely slow (and almost dead). One factory even had to use an unused aeroplane runway to park the cars.

Will see if I can get the pictures.

So thats around R63,5k then add your taxes etc. Thats competing in Chery QQ and Chevy spark territory, both popular established models.

The best way to get hold of one (assuming you want to) is to cut out some of the middlemen and import a knocked down kit straight from India for the promised R20k, even if the shipping/taxes were 100%, it would still be R40k. Good luck assembling it with Indian instructions!!
