I have been using Netlimiter for years now, Currently using NetLimiter 2 Pro ver 2.0.10.1

I find it is extremely easy to use, has a built in firewall (if you want to use it), you can limit uploads/downloads with it, block programs accessing the internet etc. It keeps an hourly record of your bandwitdh usage for as long as you monitor (mine goes back to April 2008). Will give you break down per process for the time selected. Very nice!!

Bonus is you can limit P2P apps upload bandwidth without affecting down speed! he he ... nasty me!:D
 
but in a situation like this of where there is a server based. Now say you try and get stuff from server or the server from you which is uploading is that speed also not limited?

Like normal File transfer or FTP ? or HTTP?:confused:

The way I understand it is: If you limit a program (basically its going to be the up or down - individually controlled) and you have set the limiting up on the program that accesses the server, then yes. But if you use another program to access that server then No. Thats what is sweet.

I basically use it to monitor my overall internet connection. I am not into knob twiddling or specific application monitoring and limiting. I reserve that for the network geeks :D

And the main reason why I prefer open source free applications for this given example is cracked/hacked software is no help when an update arrives - or it turns into this mission of finding new patches/serials ect.

I used to use NetLimiter, which is a network geeks wet dream. Bandwidth Meter was great when i used it however it fails with Vista and also required some try-before-you-buy-extension before it would work.

So yeah.

NetMeter. Free & Simple ;)
 
SoftPerfect Bandwidth Manager. Can limit speeds, total downloads, weekly/monthly limits, limit specific IPs, etc.
