How to boost my wifi signal...

Hi Guys,

I currently have a Netgear wg311t and a 23dbi grid antenna. What can I add to that ensamble to give it a bit more in terms of distance...

I would look at the router. Does it support 80211.n ?
If not, fix this first
 
If you are going point to point then you should be fine, but that antenna will not actually work in your house. You will have a "beam" of about 3˚ (degrees), coming out of that antenna.
(In short, the reception area will be as thick as a CD)

You will be better off getting yourself a 8dbi omni directional antenna or another AP.
 
Hi,

I'm not broadcasting my linksys wrt54g blew up thanks to eskom and I've yet to find a decent replacement for it. The netgear WG311T is my wifi nic. I'm connecting to another AP but my signal fades in and out - I just moved and i'm further away from it than I used to be :( . Is there anyway to increase signal - i'm pretty much a noob - I've heard amping is bad but I need to increase my signal fractionally. What can I add in to boost the signal. I want to go to miro or scoop today.

Whats the difference between using a mikrotek router board and an ap like a linksys wrt54gl? Any difference in signal etc?

That grid has a 10˚ Horizontal and 14˚ Vertical Beamwidth... 3˚ is wayy too thin for any antenna, afaik a dish has the thinest and thats 6˚

How would that increase signal - what do those boards do - pricing? Thanks - J

Well I have never worked with a netgear but like i said on IRC, these MT boards are alot more configurable than standard wifi stuff. One of these configurations is the ability to boost your mini-pci wifi cards power... so from a default of 17dbm ( CM9 ), you can increase it safely to 23dbm giving you alot more power.

Remember though, increase power = increase in noise = decrease in signal quality a.k.a CCQ ( dont confuse this with actual signal ). Gotta find the balance between power/noise/signal
