FIFA: South African Fans Not Buying Enough Tickets

South African fans were told by world controlling body FIFA and the 2010 Local Organising Committee (LOC) to get their act together and support both the Confederation Cup and the 2010 World Cup finals.

What is worrying FIFA and the LOC is the fact that only 170,000 tickets out of 640,000 have been sold for the Confederation Cup, which kicks off in 102 days on June 14 when Bafana Bafana play Asian champions Iraq in the opening Group A match at Ellis Park.

Ticket sales for the World Cup are much better, with a third of the 64 matches already sold out. Over 506,000 tickets have been purchased worldwide. Both the opening match and final are sold out.

But 2010 LOC chairman Irvin Khoza warned: "Overseas sales beat local sales by 3-1. It is not good enough. We brought both events here for our people to see the two biggest events on the world soccer calendar and yet the response has been poor. I am encouraging and appealing to fans to get out and buy tickets, otherwise South African soccer lovers are going to be forced to watch the matches on TV."

LOC chief executive Danny Jordaan was more scathing about the poor response from local fans. He said, "There has been more enthusiasm from countries like Australia and Canada than from SA. It is disappointing. It will be a poor show if the world TV audience sees empty stadiums at the Confederations Cup. I stress that a successful Confederations Cup will mean an ever bigger World Cup. I urge all South Africans to buy tickets now for both events."

While the World Cup promotes itself, FIFA and the LOC rely on 80 per cent local sales for the Confederations Cup. But FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke lashed out at the lack of promotion of the Confederation Cup in all the hosts cities.

Said Valcke: "I was astounded when I arrived in the country yesterday (Monday) and did not see a single poster promoting the Confederations Cup. I have told the LOC that they have to get out and start promoting the event on a massive scale. One cannot expect to sell tickets for the Confederations Cup if there is no promotion. This is the dress rehearsal for the World Cup and needs a lot of advertising and promotion locally. I conveyed this message to the LOC."

Meanwhile Khoza said that all four stadiums, Ellis Park, Loftus, the Free State Stadium and the Royal Ba***eng Stadium would be ready on schedule for the Confederations Cup.

Khoza also stressed that fans and participating teams need not worry about security during both events following the attack on Sri Lankan cricket players in Pakistan on Tuesday. Stated Khoza: "Our security will be tight and we a do not envisage any problems."

Suprised that sales by overseas people is beating say 3-1 considering we getting discounted tickets.

Also are they not promoting the conf cup enough back home?

Amazing tournament to go watch so why are the tickets not selling.

Well easy...

People don't have money. Those who do, probably can't travel. The "majority" of "our people" he is talking about are living in shacks and earning less than 2000 rand a month. Do the math...

Confed Cup isn't being promoted at all.

Also, there aren't any games in Durban, and with the World Cup coming next year, there's no point in me sheeling out and travelling a distance now to watch teams who aren't really gonna be battling it out. i might make a trip for the Italy-Brazil game, but other than that, I doubt it.

I don't like watching soccer. It's boring.
I'll play it though.

Confed cup is not even that important imo. It's just a curtain raiser to the real thing so I can understand why people aren't exactly rushing out for tickets. Also no games in Cape Town.

And lets be honest majority of the people who go to stadiums dont have that kind of cash laying around. At the last match I attended at Athlone Stadium some guys were begging me to by them a ticket, which cost R25.

The LOC have been pathetic. The professionalism at times is pathetic.
The flow of information, pathetic. Communication...pathetic.

Danny Jordaan can lead the LOC but having a handful of competent people can't produce a world class organizing committee.

The LOC are second world, bordering on third world in some cases.

Also are they not promoting the conf cup enough back home? Definately NOT! also WTF is up with the stupid request for tickets... I've request 5 tickets to go watch Italy vs Brazil at Lofturs yet they denied my request whilst my friend who bought the follow your team (the day after me) got 10 tickets! This is seriously retarded...

Oh and the other problem for the WC... no one know's who'll play who yet the ticket sales has gone up... so if I bought tickets to say Match 8 D3 vs D4 and end up watching (Iraq vs Congo)... or Australia vs Scotland... I would not be impressed

A1 = Bafana

Bafana play in Joburg, (Soccer City) and in Pretoria and Bloem.

That's all we know.

I live in Joburg but was willing to go through to Bloem and Rustenburg. Applied for most of the big name games (Brazil, Italy, Spain) all those requests we rejected, leading me to believe they're sold out....unless FIFA is off-side with their sales.

The only ticket i could get for the Confed Cup is the SA vs Iraq game at Ellis Park :(

Well everyone knows bafana won't be in any of the "big games" so you're only really going to get the big soccer fans or the foreign country supporters. And the foreign country supporters don't want to go watch Iraq etc...

Fifa really pissess me off with the issuing of the tickets... first they say SA will get preference yet I applied about 1 month after ticket sales went on whilest my friends applied 2 weeks after me and they all got tickets except for me! #@$%^
