Can’t name cop shop after defector’

The ANC Youth League wants the MW Makhubela Police Station in Giyani to be renamed – for the second time – to Giyani Police Station, because the person it was named after has joined the Congress of the People.

The station’s name was changed in February 2006 by the ANC in the area, in honour of the station commissioner, Wilson Mafemane Makhubela.

Problems arose this week when Makhubela, former adviser to the former minister of safety and security Charles Nqakula, resigned from the ANC to join Cope.

Youth League provincial secretary Goodman Mtileni said yesterday Makhubela betrayed the people of Giyani.

ANC speaker in the Giyani municipality Risimati Mabunda said plans were now afoot to reverse the name. – Victor Hlungwane

SIGN LANGUAGE: The ANC Youth League says the name of this police station is now ‘politically incorrect’ and should be changed pronto.

Tell that to the Sowetan who published the story. It would be funny though if they decided to change the name of the police station again.

Simply disgusting that the ANC use such trivialities to keep people on their side...

Like a pedophile coaxing children with sweets. Yes I just compared the ANC to a pedo.

Why must police stations have names ? Can't it be named by the area it's in?

Ever heard of something called political patronage? It happens all over the world and is like a "thank you" to either a political figure or his offspring. Nothing controlled by the government is immune from having its name changed...deal with it.

So if the FF+ and all the whites get a 3/3ths majority, we can change all the names back to apartheid heros? And that would be acceptable to you and the world ?

Interestingly enough, there are towns/cities that were named by the British e.g. East London, Port Elizabeth etc. and once British rule was ended, the names remained as they were. Seems in 1948, the government could not bother less with name change.

Problem is even if they got 3/3ths of majority the YT's wouldn't be able to agree to anything. Unfortunately its the nature of politics, that those in power will want to extend their influence to the names of public places...only problem is that the ANC does not realise that through this they alienate a lot of people (not just the FF+ guys in Pretoria) and are under the mistaken belief that they will always run SA.

The thing about a "mistaken belief" is that the mistaker actually believes it to be true. And plans accordingly, even if it ends up biting him in the butt, ie the naming of the cop shop after the ex ANC Cope Traitor revolutionary, running dog lackey.
