Tax relief to encourage consumers to scrap their old cars is one of the measures being considered by the department of trade and industry to assist the automotive industry.
Mercedes-Benz South Africa chief executive Hansgeorg Niefer said on Wednesday other measures on the table included providing bridging finance for automotive component manufacturers with cash flow problems and a finance guarantee, because banks were "shy" to provide credit to consumers.
Niefer said it made sense to provide consumers with tax relief or an allowance for the scrapping of old cars.
This had been discussed in South Africa before the economic downturn, because the government wanted to get newer, more environmentally friendly vehicles on the roads, he said. - Roy Cokayne
