Slow ADSL speeds? Please give your views!

Hi folks

Are you also experiencing a slowdown using ADSL, especially with traffic other than HTTP? I have done a few tests and the results are as follows:

Stanford:

running 10s outbound test (client to server) . . . . . 3.96Kb/s
running 10s inbound test (server to client) . . . . . . 3.41kb/s

Bandwidthplace:

99.6 kilobits per second: Rating: Slow

ADSL Guide:

** An error has occurred while testing **

NY Game Server:

Ping time to RPM: 17348 milliseconds

These speeds are much worse than last month (or the past six months for that matter), and I am quite certain that something was done on Telkom’s side to induce this radical change. It is getting close to what we have experienced towards the end of last year!

Please give your views on the matter as I will definitely be contacting Telkom to address this issue.

Everything seemed a bit slow on Monday my side, just logged off, did somethign else and came back 30 min later, was better,
had problems logging into MSN also at the same time.

I have have to "re-boot" my Telkom POTS more aften lately... seemd like there are a lot of "bad" ip's being dished out. As for speed, even local speeds have dropped!
 
I noticed this problem yesterday. As u said, specifically on POP3, http seems slow but not unbearably slow.

Gotta hold of SAIX and they have a recorded message saying that they r experiencing international access problems.

SO we played along with this. Wednesday morning started off fine but after 12h00 it went slow again. I have noticed that small files 50kb< are fine. This bigger files can take upto 4 HOURS !!

Grrr, very frustrating, but what can be done about it ??

It is now 1715 and accessing this forum is painfully slow. I have also noticed that large files are downloading at a muchh slower speed than smaller files and have posted elsewqhere about this

Thanks for noticing.

Things actually slowed down dramatically from Saturday morning. I use unshaped ADSL for gaming, and all international pings have slowed noticably since Saturday. I have been planning to put together some trace-routes and ping results to mail to the helpdesk manager - it worked for the last time. It's just such a tiring exercise and takes about 10 phone calls ane emails before they start noticing - I just didn't find the energy yet. But you're right - and if you have a contact to raise it then I for one would be most grateful.

Additionally, i was unable to connect to this forum yesterday several times during the day. Bear in mind i use ISDN. I also tried using my 56k, no go. It connects to the front page just fine, but couldn't get into forums. By yesterday evening it was fine.

They're probably slowing down international access so they can wring more profit by having people use less bandwidth so they score more.

Telkom says that nothing can be gauranteed, but then they should refund us after the month for unforscene incidents like this. We have to accept the condition that speeds cant be gauranteed but they can pocket more because of this. Not acceptable!

Maybe since the 384k package came in they've put us all on that.... who knows.
 
I must be one of the lucky ones, as I've had (including the day) perfectly good speeds, locally and interantionally :). Also a large file which I downloaded from http://games.saix.net was around 50kb/sec.

Did you make any contact rpm? Just got home from work (Thursday 21 Oct 6.15pm), and speeds are back to "normal" i.e. like they were before this week-end's slow-down.
 
I also experienced a slowdown - DNS queries often take a few seconds.

I'm getting the feel that the Proxies are overloaded. HTTP is quite often almost useless on a non-capped account.

Yesterday I managed a mind blowing transfer speed (scp) of 0.8kB/s to a local server.

Can't wait for Vodacom 3G/ iBurst /others to succeed

I have been on ADSL (Mweb) for about a year and have noticed a dramatic decrease in speed over the past few weeks. Some download tests:

2004/10/15 - 27kbps down, 38 up
2004/10/19 - 7 kbps down, 159 up

Some test simply never complete, or take so long I abandon them. (Different servers)

I get better transfer rates supporting my customers over a dial-up modem linking mostly at 33Kb. (56 seems unachievable over Telkom lines).

I have also found that Mweb's broadband tools report ISDN speeds and 56K at times.

Subjectively, the experience when browsing international sites is equivalent to that of a 1200 baud dial-up: 3 minutes to populate Amazon.com's home page with a best of 20 seconds? Nights and Sundays are marginally better.

I am presently using a VPN that exchanges very small character based messages (mainframe terminal simulation - airline global distribution system) and this connection dies like clockwork after two or three exchanges. Because of this my productivity (developing a major travel system - 3 years in the making) is cut down to perhaps 5% of what I normally achieve.

Predictably, Telkom claim all is fine, and so do Mweb. The latter insulted me by suggesting the most superficial and rudimentary setup changes on my side (For the record: I have 30 plus years of IT experience - including considerable networking experience - and a degree in Computer Science, so I have a fair idea of what is going on). MWeb "escalated" the problem on three separate occasions, failing to come back to me each time.

I get the distinct impression that most of the problem lies beyond the Mweb servers and not between me and them, since local sites are tolerable and tests between me and them appear to return acceptable results.

Finally, my dowload volume is small (used approximately 0.6 G and it is now the end of the month) so there are no capping issues.

Were it not for the "always on" connection, I would have reverted to dial-up with no hesitation.
 
International bit torrent speeds have dropped dramatically. I used to be able to get a solid 40K on my home 384k line. I average 30K now.

I would like to ask this question.

How many people have taken up the new 384 ADSL offering?

Perhaps the network is busier than usual with the new subscribers all blowing their 3 gigs.

I personally know of 3 people who have invested in the 384 offering, I wouldn't be surprised if there's been a pretty large uptake country-wide.

That doesn't mean that Telkom is going to increase the bandwidth to offset the usage of the additional users, though.
