Windows 7 beta 1 performance - How does the OS compare to Vista and XP?

Faster than xp dablak.

PS takes about 5-7 seconds to open in windows xp and vista, in windows 7 it is open in about 3 seconds, corel x4 opens instantly on windows 7, both xp and vista take around 5 seconds the first time you open it.

From my experience windows 7 kicks vista and xp hard in terms of raw speed, it is actually a pleasure when you see hard programs like corel and photoshop open as if you have the fastest pc on the planet.

I was going to get intel i7 but they open so fast i am not going to anymore because they cannot actually open faster, so windows 7 beta saved me like 12k :).

Well, I do not care a damn for figures as many factors may play a role. For me its the experience that counts. I have two systems next to each other. Win7 and XP. Yeah there are other differences like platform etc. But this PC with win7 had XP before I installed Win7. When I surf, search or post on the net the now Win7 system is quick where before I would have sometimes enough time in between to browse/surf on the other XP system too.

Applications open fast. Error recovery is quick and fully automated. Drivers updating is just a dream come true. WMP streaming to PS3 is what it always should have been. Videos stream perfect without a hitch over wireless, in actual fact I tried a wired network and the wireless seemed to be smoother.

All in all there are just No comparison of what was before to what is now. I now hate to work on the XP system, everything integrates and oparate so much smoother. IE8 will prevent me from looking at any other browser for a long time.

Then there is the Ready/boost function, plug a fast drive or USB memory device and select ready boost to enable the device to be used as a cache.

Just to many things to mention!

The overall feel of speed and proffesionalism is just beyond XP et al. Thus the overall experience in my view is just like Killzone2 for the PS3, a nice revelation, a breath of fresh air. If you have not tried it (Win7) you cannot describe it.

PS: I'm off to collect my bonus cheque from M$. :)

Only issue with windows 7 is that there's no working edition of daemon tools and won't be till win 7 officially launches. If there was I would switch over completely to win 7.

I'm sure you can find a few other similar tools, daemon doesn't do that much. It Does work very well though, you'll have to find something that bypasses secrurom etc properly. (If that is your concern ;O)

I prefer daemon especially their pro advanced version. Its the one I have find which works best for securom 7 games. Daemon pro advanced plus their dte tool is the best combo. Also before anyone asks all the games are legal copies I just uses daemon so I don't need to swap disc's. I don't it use it for the games that work without the dvd any, so need for it for mass effect, spore or fifa 09.

Virtual clone drive as far as I know isn't able to block securom 7 and safedisc while daemon is able to do that. Magiciso from what I have read can make backup images but that won't help with running the games, you will get an error messages of emulation software detected.

Stefan if they were not legal games we would not care :p

Yea pengiun readyboost is old man, considering the price of memory though it would be kinda psilly to use a usb key for extra memory :).

Anyone who says xp is faster or better now than is just biased or has not used windows 7 :).

Erm...I can take photos of my LEGAL games collection and I'm fully with Stefan on this. I'm installing the new build of 7 today and hearing this is saddening :(

I used to copy my originals so they don't get damaged. After finding Daemon a few years back, it was the best thing ever...and I'd be gutted to lose it, even for a short while.

Drac first off it is beta software so it is not like you will keep this software for the next 5 years.

At the moment i am booting off my windows 7 drive which i use for day stuff and then at night i boot into my vista Hdd to game online :)

Punkbuster for online games does not work either.

How much of a performance boost is this likely to provide?

I've only just stuck a spare 2gb SD card into the expansion slot on my Asus Aspire One and configured it for Ready Boost.
