Zinedine Zidane believes Steven Gerrard is the best player in the world.
The legendary former Real Madrid playmaker saw his old club dismantled by Gerrard's Liverpool on Tuesday night, when the Reds ran out 4-0 winners at Anfield, 5-0 on aggregate.
England's midfield star scored two of the goals and ahead of Friday's crucial trip to Old Trafford, Zidane has claimed he is a better all-round player than Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo, the current holder of the Ballon d'Or.
"Is he the best in the world? He might not get the attention of (Lionel) Messi and Ronaldo but yes, I think he just might be," the former France captain said.
"If you don't have a player like Steven Gerrard, who is the engine room, it can affect the whole team."
"When we were winning league titles and European Cups at Real, I always said Claude Makelele was our most important player."
"There is no way myself, (Luis) Figo or Raul would have been able to do what we did without Claude and the same goes for Liverpool and Gerrard."
Zidane added: "He has great passing ability, can tackle and scores goals, but most importantly he gives the players around him confidence and belief."
"You can't learn that - players like him are just born with that presence."
Damn that is an endorsement of note from one of the greatest players of all time :)

Gerrard is an important player (probably cause that's all they got bar Torres) but that's an ambitious statement to say the least.
I tend to agree with Zidane somewhat. Gerald is an all-rounder. We can't compare Gerald with Messi or Ronaldo. But Gerald is the one that makes things happen in terms of controlling the entire game. I've always liked Gerald.

Gerrard motivates Liverpool to no end. If he isn't on the field i don't feel Liverpool play the same. He is a great player.

That's like saying Maradona wasn't a great player because he is now a cocaine addict.
Zidane is on crack.
Hiddink said the same thing IIRC. IS he too also on crack?
I've said it before as a complete footballer(Add to that his leadership qualities ) Gerrard is the very best. He can play anywhere on the pitch. Ronaldo and Messi can't. I'd always pick him ahead of them knowing I have one the very the best CMs in the world, a captain and a player who can cover for the entire out field team as opposed to just being the best at one position.

How do you measure something as vague as "best player"? It is purely subjective.
Serqet
13-03-2009, 10:35 AM
Whenever measuring the best of anything it is purely subjective. So one would assume that the more people who agree with the statement the more weight it holds.

So because Guus said so, it's true? If he was the best then he would of won some FIFA awards by now.

You have to take some things into account.
His a ex-real madrid player hence will never give respect to the enemy (barca)
He is looking at getting a job at real madrid in the coming months.
He would obviously want to compliment a liverpool player due to their big loss in the week (as an excuse)
With that said I think Gerrard is a good player but not the best in the world.

The mere fact that he affirmed that the Real attack would have been for **** if it wasn't for Maka, makes alright in my book! Without proper defense, offense can't do it's ****!

Gerrard is good, but he'll never have the speed and skills of Messi and Ronaldo. But in terms of a team player and a motivator, he's great at it.

Yeah, no, you're right... Zidane obviously doesn't know that Ronaldo and Messi have better skills than Gerrard. How silly of him. To think an actual football player, never mind one of his calibre, can overlook something like is tragic. Just what is the game coming to?

Of course there is.
There are players that stand head and shoulders above the rest.
Pele
Maradona

Forget that year, Marodonna was voted as player of the century by FIFA.

Still! Ronaldo has won player of the year according to FIFA. Does that now mean that nobody else is good enough to win it? You can't just determine it based on an award. Hence i say i would put him on a list of great players.
Serqet
13-03-2009, 02:45 PM
no i don't think they are given out for fun. but i don't think you can dismiss everyone else based on the fact they didn't win an award.

Nope, i dont think so. If he was the best, he would play great for England. We all know how that always turns out.

81 goals in 83 games internationally is... wow...
edit:** who was the hungarian forward that moved to barca at the time... he was also brilliant, but not puskas brilliant...
particularly that 5-1 drubbing of england (who at the time, for all those not in the know) were unbeaten on the continent...

Now you're just asking for a head-butt...
He is the best player I have ever played with, and I have played with some great players with Spain and Liverpool, added the Spaniard.
He could easily be the best player in the world.
