how do i get 4:3 or 16:9 from a resolution or know it is

just by looking at the resolution of 1680 x 1050 how do i work it back so i know it is 16:9 ?, or 1280 x 1024 to 4:3 ?

looking for the math involved

for me to know the aspect ratio i usually look at the resolution and if they are far apart then its 16:9 and if nearer to one another then 4:3.

Take 1680 x 1050 and put the 1680 as numerator and 1050 as denominator and you will then work out its 16 over 10 thus a 16:10 aspect ratio

1280*1024 is 5:4 not 4:3.

1440/900 = 16/10

Therefore 1440x900 is 16:10.
