Whats happening at IS

I noticed yesterday theres been some major cable work going on across the road from 'the campus' on main road, but when I say cable work, I mean that all the ground across the road from the campus has had a massive trench dug into it, I also noticed 2 of those big wooden cable rolls you often see strapped to the back of a truck .

I didn't think much of it then, until I drove past Telkom office / yard on william nicol, about a KM from the campus, and also noticed all the ground arount that lot has also been dug up!

looks like all the trenches are surrounding Telkom and the campus (IS/didata etc)

Anyone know whats going on, am I way off the mark, or could this be the linkups for IS to provide ADSL termination on their side?

I heard it was happening a while back, but haven't heard anything else about it for a long time, a glimmer of hope perhaps? am i dreaming ?

I have access to an ISDN dialup to I.S. - and if their ADSL latency can come close to their ISDN international latency, I'm there. Check this out - 170ms pings to the UK (ISDN 64K)

The digging everyone is seeing is for a big dish they are fitting there, apparently a big mother... of a dish.

As for the ADSL, being launched end next week.

My guess: Roll-out will be very fast in the "rich" and business areas. This is most probably the front runner of IS's VOIP infrastructure.

They need access to the Telkom Exchanges for that, and while they have such access, they use it to the fullest.

They anyway have to create a decent data-network for VOIP, and adding ADSL will be a bonus.

Guess it will be R404 installation payable to Telkom, and then monthly fees to IS. I do hope they will follow the US/UK/Europe/Aussie/NZ type of pricing regime.

Possibly they will combine their VOIP and ADSL (bandwidth) offerings into very cost effective deals to business.

Unfortunately we will have to wait 2 weeks before we will know for sure.

Anyone able to provide an ADSL solution (If that is what Shrok is speaking about) is only referring to bandwidth and packages, lines will still be rented from [V]telkom[}

], the difference is that this could be a first for SA, routing of lines, so that the provider is not merely reselling [V]telkom[

!] packages, but can design their own packages and service.
So, in response to rollout, if it is an ADSL solution, wherever [V]Telkom[xx(] can provide it!

The way I understood it, Same line rental and installation costs to telkom however IS will be offering different packages from ISP side, eg. uncapped adsl or bigger caps and better services,etc

Just to be clarify... presumably the DSLAMs will still be operated by Telkom, but you will be connecting to the IS BRASs instead of SAIX BRASs; this is NOT the same as the VISPs selling SAIX accounts. I would think that you would still pay the same line rental to Telkom, though (R680 / R800), which is a bit of a ripoff... add IS charges on top of that for internet access, and the worthwhile packages will probably total up to something fairly expensive.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see, though...
