Took a while to unlock and update it though, so good luck.

If you have the Silver Steam package, HL1:Source is available for download now.

It's really good. Very atmospheric. If you've read George Orwell's 1984 or seen the film that's what it's like.

Shortly after the start you enter City 17 where the game takes place and my jaw literally dropped. The graphics and surround audio make it seem almost real. Screenshots don't do the game justice.

The gravity gun is good fun, but you have to play for quite a while before you get it. Difficulty level is adjustable on the fly and you can quicksave whenever you want. The game pacing is frantic at times but interspersed with some puzzles where you have to interact with the environment to proceed and have some time to explore.

There is no Half Life 2 deathmatch built in if you were wondering.

A few negatives: High end hardware needed for a good experience and load times for levels are long. There are scenes where you are running like hell from the bad guys that are suddenly interrupted by the loading screen for many seconds and that breaks the immersion somewhat.

Best FPS ever? Probably.

Edit: It now appears that there is some rudimentary multiplayer support, no maps yet.

I'm looking to get my copy authenticated using a dial up connection. Has anyone done this yet, and if so how long did it take?

**EDIT: I'm currently finishing the Steam authentication on HL2. So ar, pulled around 17MB, been connected for about 1.25 hours...maybe 20% of the unlock to go...
The Steam update takes about 10MB, and the HL2 part the rest so far[:(]

It took me 2 and a half hours on ADSL. I did try authenticate it at the exact release time though. It seems some people got it to authenticate quickly and others had to wait.

Total time for me was 1.5 hours - this is on 56k dialup.
Steam update takes 15MB, HL2 unlock takes around 5MB, first time you run HL2 pulls another 1MB.

But once thats over...[:>]

Bloody brilliant...thats all I can say.

I unlocked it in 20min on my ADSL[8D] however that was on a Thursday evening.

However I have a problem and that is there is no sound in the HL2 or in any other game.

The speakers only play the Windows sounds....I did install Windows SP2, so could that be a problem?

P.S I have updated the drivers.

Counting down...
123 days till the end of Hellkom

Manually adjust audio settings in control panel? You need to give more info DR. Sometimes wav channel gets muted or turned down by VoiP software...

:o)

Wow! What a game! I am currently at the scene where you control the ant lions to fight with you! Scary stuff and hella cool! That mother of a bridge was a monster to move around on in order to disable the force fields. The vehicles are amazing and getting smashed by a train is actually fun! The realism in terms of gravity and so forth is a wonder to behold and the varying strenght required to pass certain obstacles is a nice touch. In other words you might not be able to hack through a wooden wall panel by hand, but driving through it at high speed is a different story...

And isn't controlling that crane something special? Does that crazy preacher actually survive after you leave him? I would like to hear other opinions...

Viva HL2!

PS. A tip. If ever in need of a battery, look for something you use to get clean in... [}:)]

No pixels were harmed in the making of this post.

Antowan, I've just found out that on the other accounts like my mom etc can play sounds perfectly including HL2...now that's strange.

Anyway the HL2 Deathmatch mod has been released.

Get it below.
http://www.hl2mp-mod.de.vu/ (26MB)

The site is in German but just go to

downloads/Full.

DR

Did you check the audio levels? Any muted channels?

:o)
