Can a totally flat battery be jump started and recharged from driving?

Nope, you will need to charge the battery a bit via the jumpers before the car will start. Once it's started the battery will charge but beware, once a battery has gone totally flat it is damaged and will not charge properly or fully again.
 
So better off buying a new battery?

When charging via jumpers, must the charger car be revving, or just idle?
 
Yes it will work.

But, the battery will not fully charge again and will only give you problems down the line. Only do that if you don't have the money for a new battery. If you do, go buy a new one.

It doesn't charge the battery per se. You need to try and start the car while being jumped. You can't park 2 cars next to each other and let the one idle for an hour and then disconnect and start it :D

Once you have started the dead battery take if for a nice drive of about 30 minutes or so.
 
You can push-start (run-start) the car and let it idle for a long time or drive around for quite a while. It will charge, but it will most likely never be as good as it once was.

could be, we were stuck once at Trade Centre and a family on holiday from up the coast somewhere saw us trying to start the car so he offered to help and took out this thing and in seconds we were on the road.

we have one now ourselves but have not used it yet.

Anyone know the rough cost of a new battery?

Oh crap, that's why it didn't work! Don't think I did that.

And guess what guys, leaving my car parked in the road earned me a nice smashed window this morning with R3k of sound stolen. If only I'd turned the ignition on (I think). :D:D

If you have a certain immobilizer it doesn't work. Depending on how it's set up. I know on my Bakkie and my Nissan Sentra I owned It could not be done unless you actually deactivated the alarm.

Strange. If the alarm/immobiliser is disarmed, it should still work, unless it's faulty. :confused: This has worked on all my cars (yeah I've had lots of dead batteries! :o).
 
lots of batteries will not charge at first and may even "short" out the system if they have been totally discharged for a long time. It is best to put it on a proper charger.

We put a dead dead battery in a corsa once, push started it, but the engine management light kicked on and the car wouldnt idle cause of the "short" it took about 40 minutes of driving and some shakes of the battery to get it to even allow the car to idle, after that it worked fine till i sold the car
