Half-Life 2 was a blast until the last 1/4 of the game, which was a let down - you could see Valve rushed the game toward the end, with the boring level design of the combine "base" - sure, it was meant to be clinical, lifeless, sterile - but it ended up looking boring instead of imposing and cold.
Basically Half-Life 2 was a culmination of all the FPS games today, taking a bit from each (and of course Half-Life 1) and making a truly memorable experience.
I disagree, however, that they "raised the bar" - I personally think Far Cry was close, only let down by a poor ending, which seems to be a problem with games as well as movies.
Doom3 was ok, it was always the engine that was the most important here - lets face it, the game was a bit too far ahead of the hardware however. As for the gameplay, started off well then got tedious 1/2 way through - there's only so many times a few daemons can spawn behind you or jump out of a dark corner before it just gets plain irritating. I'm looking forward to see what gets developed with the engine over the next few years - as the hardware catches up, we'll see some truly wonderful real time rendering.
The game that I'm really waiting for is GTA San Andreas for the PC - I don't have a PS2 and don't really want one, but the GTA series on PC have to be the most fun I've EVER had with a computer game. Vice City was just truly incredible and from what I've heard, San Andreas is as good and then some.
As for the Sims - bleh, never liked it. Also can't stand bloody RPG point-click-build-attack yawn-o-rama-city. Warcraft 3 was the last one I bought and it was then I realised that these types of games are not for me, I'd rather read.
