I want a Canon...but which one?

So i've already pretty much made up my mind that i want a Canon. Nikon is too expensive and even though i've heard Sony and Pentax have some good cameras, i'm just not sold.

I wanted to get the Canon 450D. Now i hear they are launching a 500D. Then again the 40D is also tempting. :confused:

What do i do? I'm a complete novice but don't want a basic entry level camera. I'd like to get a mid-range camera so i can grow into it.

Also, is the camera that important or are the lens' what ensure a great image?

Any advice would be much appreciated. :)
 
500D - I'd buy one tomorrow if one of my 400Ds went belly up.

I actually bought myself a SH 40D today. I was planning on getting the 50D but its highly overpriced in SA and with the R/$ exchange its not worth importing at this point. So I'm using the 40D until 60D/7D arrives.

My current camera is a 400D, and if you wanted to stay within the under R10k bracket then I'd say wait for the 500D. The 500D is specc'ed like the 50D with a couple of things missing - Micro AF, Rear Curtain Sync, Higher FPS, Better body build, Jog wheel interface... - but then you do get the movie mode and for some I'm sure 720p/30 is pretty decent. There is a lot of noise about the HD movie capability. Not so sure when they are hitting the streets in SA as they were only made public on the 24th March.
 
Thanks guys!!! Will the missing aspects of the 500d make any real difference?
 
I'd take the 40D over any of the xxxD bodies any day. Although the 500D's increased ISO capability does muddy the waters somewhat.

I was trying not to sound like an ass :)

Never say never, but highly unlikely. Especially since the 500D is more expensive than the 40D.

The 40D has 100-1600 plus boost to 3200. The 500D (like all the recent models) has 100-3200 with boost to 6400 and 12800. The Auto-ISO (a feature I like) on the 40D is also limited to 400-800 in Av, TV and M, where on the newer cams it's 100-1600 as far as I know.
 
I'm in the same boat as the OP. Basically I've chosen canon because it's the most widely used and there's far more equipment floating around 2nd hand etc.

The question comes to basically 500D or 40D. What I'd like to know is what *really* makes the xxD bodies any better than the xxxD bodies?

The main differences I can see are the size of the body, the extra "display" (don't think it's an LCD) on top of the xxD and the jog wheel.

At the moment I'm think the 500D would be better because it's a bit more compact and therefore more likely to end up actually being used. As for the build it's probably not going to get such heavy use from me that it will matter. The 500D will be replaced in a few years but the glass wont.
 
Oh and one more diff, pentamirror vs pentaprism and usually the size of the viewfinder.

Haven't priced this so i can't say for sure. Just think lens' for Nikon are pricey and i don't see the quality being all that much better than Canon.

Like i said earlier though, i'm a novice so i could be wrong. Just my opinion!
 
Nikon D40 plus 18-55 lens is R5k
and it's one of the best cameras out today
can't beat that price
I went for the D90, but maybe I should not have haha
 
d90 is a great camera!!! do you buy lens' often? interested to know if photographers stick to the brand or opt for grey lens' like Sigma etc

Comparing the 40D and 500D is a bit unfair, almost two years have passed since the 40D was announced. If you compare 400D vs 40D or 500D vs 50D, the xxD has better build quality, bigger body (more comfortable for me, less for others), more water/dust resistence, the LCD on top, more information in the viewfinder, pentaprism viewfinder (yes, it does make a difference), more buttons to control more functions directly without taking your face off the camera, bigger buffer, higher frame rate, one stop higher ISO and usually one stop higher shutter speed. There are more smaller differences but not stuff I care about so don't ask me to recite.
