Icasa announced that they will now make available 1 license for a company to run a satellite TV service much like DSTV, only that the service must comprise of only free-to-air channels.

In SA we until recently had a service called Free-2-View. They had exactly the same concept in mind, but because of financial pressure they discontinued their service. Their bouquet included MSNBC which is an American news channel mixed with some great variety shows on weekends. Their plan was to add more channels later as soon as they can source them.

Many of you might think that if a new free-to-air service were to be launched that the service couldn't possibly include any good entertainment channels. Only Christian and news channels. You would greatly be mistaking.

Sky TV is the UK equavilent to DStv. The full Sky TV service includes over 600 channels! And this includes 240 free-to-air channels that are outside of Sky TV's control and can be freely distributed at will. You don't even need a smartcard to view 90% of the channels, the remaining 10% are not FTA outside the UK.
Here follows a list of the free-to-air channels in the UK that may potentially be available on the new FTA network in South Africa:

As well as a whole lot of great radio stations.

Believe it or not, we in South Africa can have the majority of these channels (we already do get some) all on one network because these channels are free-to-air and may be distributed to South Africa!
Imagine that! I will CANCEL my DStv!

I hope they get the following, oh and I see that men and motors is listed in the wrong section as far as I can remember Men and motors only showed naked woman and not much men or motors.

looks promising... the catch must be all those shopping channels
was hoping sci-fi or "syfy" would be on the list

First companies must tender for the broadcasting license from Icasa (just like ODM and Telkom Media had to do for a pay-TV license in 2007) which in itself could take a couple of months before completion. After the lincense has been granted the winning tender company must set up their broadcasting infrastructure which could take more than a year (even 2 years, look how long it took for ODM to get sufficient funding), then the company must sign deals with FTA broadcasters to be able to receive a good beam of their channels to redirect it to our homes, because at present there are no means of picking up the existing signals (so don't even try). The company must also sort out the issues regarding the sales of decoders and equipment. We may only benefit from this new FTA broadcasting license in 3 years time.
One other issue is that this new FTA broadcaster will most propably only be able to broadcast from a satellite other than PAS7/10, which MultiChoice and Sentech uses since these satellites are close to reaching their full capacity.

And my last thought... SENTECH. Yes, Sentech! They already beam some FTA signals to our homes via their Vivid Satellite system. Why don't they just go and pick up and add the above mentioned channels to their bouquet? They already have the neccesary infrastructure in place! JUST DO IT!!! Then it's done!

Dreambox / PC Satelite Tuner Cards

Is it possible to pick up any of these FTA channels using an FTA receiver like the dreambox or even a Satelite Receiver?

Is it possible to get Sky in SA ?

Unfortunately, No. These FTA channels and Sky TV uses the Astra2 satellite which is WAY out of SA's range. If it were possible to pick up the Astra2 signal we ALL would have Sky TV. Now if you had a Dreambox in the UK or in most of Europe then you would be sorted.

You really need to check your facts before you reply about satellite stuff.

1 Sky uses Eurobird 1 and Astra 2A/B/C/D
2 These fta channels you quoted are a collection from many satellites accesible from the UK
Eurobird 1
Astra 2A/B/C/D
Badr 4
Hot bird 6/8/9
...and many other.

3 FTA means free to watch, not free to use commercially.Sky,Virgin and Freesat can do that because the channels are already on their sats, they just group it into a user friendly way.

All dirty lies!

I was speculating. We can still see many of those FTA channels if the new FTA channel provider can close deals with the channels which should be easy to do. Maybe not channels such as CNN and Zone Reality coz Multichoice already got them in a contract. But there are many channels on that list that we don't yet receive, meaning that there should not be any license infringements, meaning we could easily get those channels in SA! -breathe-
