Vodafone own 35% of Vodacom. I think Vodacom are going to use Vodafone technology for the 3G services.

Maybe Vodacom will morph into Vodafone. Vodafone is a UK firm, the worlds biggest cell operator.

Ja well, and Vodacom is majority-owned by Telkrap, as far as I know. Seems Vodafone and Telkrap have the same approach to advertising - spin as much as you can...

As far as I know Vodafone will be Vodacom's content partner for 3G in SA. We are talking TV and other on the fly content on your phone. The price issue is a big one and fears in that regard are valid!

I was shown the tech at Vodacom's Tech Expo on a corporate preview. Nice, but I doubt it will be cheap. :o(

HmM i used to live in edinburgh and i dont remember vodafone being expesive, as for the ads, vodafone owns a big share in vodacom (practically all of it) and they are going to bring 3G to SA.

No pixels were harmed in the making of this post.

Vodafones 3G pricing does not seem too bad:

http://www.vodafone-i.co.uk/live/3g_phones.html

Choose from any of the phones below and get 500 anytime any network voice minutes, 50 anytime any network video calling minutes and 100 text messages, all for just £40 a month when you connect to Vodafone for 12 months.

Also includes:

FREE subscriptions to Sky Sports and Barclays Premiership, ITN News and film trailers
3 FREE full track music downloads per month until the end of February 2005. (Not available with Samsung Z107)
FREE browsing on Vodafone live!

Ok, you have to pay for the phone, but it's not much. Shall we open the betting that Vodacom will charge similar rates.....

You cannot even get a 500 min contract here for less than about R700.

Oh, good to see 12 month contract, none of this 24 month crap.

I have a sneaky suspicion that vodacom will rename to vodafone. Think about it, vodafone sponsor top sports around the world, eg. man united, ferrari etc. , we get all that coverage now on dstv, yet that advertising is worthless over here, so i think a namechange is sensible for them.

Interesting how MTN are prioritising expansion into africa above 3g. I think they must have noticed how long its taking to take off in europe. Considering the billions of euros it cost the networks to secure licences over there, i wonder if its all worth it?

<blockquote id="quote"><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id="quote">quote:<hr height="1" noshade id="quote">

What 3G will offer:

# Vodacom will offer Vodafone LIVE! content.

# High speed data - initially 384 kilobits but into the megabit range later.

# Video-on-demand for sport, entertainment and music.

# Live city and beach cameras.

How much will it cost?

Contract - will start from about R200 to R300 including video and voice calling time as well as Internet access.

Handsets - free on contract for lower-end phones, R7 000 for high-end phones.
<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">

That doesn't answer one very important question - how much internet access to you get for that cost ? Is it tied into the contract the same as voice - IOW, say 100 minutes of either for the basic entry level ?

If it is, then that's just a total ripoff.

Also, how much of the internet can you access ?
If you can only go onto the portal - yawn - boring.
To entise me into a 24month contract, I'd have to :-

1. Get 24/7 internet connectivity at a set monthly fee
2. Be able to hook it up to a PC as an internet connection
