Hi folks

Just a short note to inform you that we are making good progress in the development of an objective broadband QoS measuring system. We are building on prior research by institutions like the Australian Department of Communications, MIT and various ISP’s and Telecoms companies. I am confident that we will be able to deliver a system which provides near undisputable results. We will also be able to measure our own offerings against international services with great accuracy…

We will need as many volunteer testers as possible in the new year. We are particularly interested in Sentech, iBurst and ADSL 384 and Unshaped users. The testing procedure will be very simple…you will simply download a small program, run it for a few days and supply us with the accompanying URL, that is it! The program is 100% safe, completely add free etc. If you can help us with testing please email us at [email protected] We really need your help to accurately measure the speeds and produce reliable results.

Thanks and regards,

RPM

I'm in for 384k ADSL.

PS: Not that I dont trust you okes ;) but you may reassure some by allowing them to peek at the code. Even if its on a 1-1 basis rather than GPL.

Hi Harth

The only reason why I don’t release all the info now is simply to follow standard survey and research protocols. This software is used in various government research projects and by other respectable institutions and we have been testing it for some time now…very stable and without any privacy issues. I will supply all the details after I have all the testers together and people are welcome to look at it first before agreeing to continue…

Regards,

RPM

This sounds very interesting - I will be happy to be a tester - I'm on ADSL 384

Hi,

How much bandwidth will it consume?

I don't think I will qualify because I'm on an office LAN connected to ADSL and the connection is quite often "drowned" by simultanious requests.

Thanks

Count me in too... I'm on ADSL512

1 Question though.. Will it require me to stop using Bandwidth for other applications during this test?

I will test but do you really want/need 512k users because in your first post u said that you're interested in Sintech/Iburst/384kDSL users so am I needed?

Hi guys

Thanks for the people that have already mailed me…please keep them coming. The more testers we have the better…

VQuest: It is indeed a very interesting project. I definitely think this is the best option to promote a better Internet broadband service in South Africa. We are confident that we can produce an accurate QoS Framework and measuring system. This will then serve as a foundation to convince government, Telkom and other players to improve on the service and get closer to first world standards. It should also serve to inform the public about the available services and their respective strengths/weaknesses.

IC: Yes…please mail to [email protected] I will contact all of the testers and inform them about the protocols etc.

Kaspaas: I do not have accurate figures, but from my experience only a few Megs per day…

Quik: Thanks for joining… You do not have to do anything…install, run, and carry on as per normal. I don’t even know when the measuring is done.

Manson: Thx…great to have 384 users!

Dominic: We definitely need as many testers as possible…whether it is 512, 384, Sentech etc. It is only that we already have many 512 volunteers, but are missing some Unshaped and Sentech testers. If anybody feel like joining in, please mail me…independent of the service.

Thanks and keep those emails coming!

RPM

Hi Folks

There is still a great need for more testers. There is a particular need for the following services: Telkom Unshaped, MyWireless 256 & 512, iBurst and 3G. If you are using one of these services please consider to help us with testing. It really is very easy…you will not even know that it happens! With enough information we can seriously challenge the DoC and other related organization about their Quality of service, price etc. We do, however, need this testing information!

Thanks and regards,

RPM

Hi Sybawoods

Thanks a bunch!! We are really looking for '512 unshaped ADSL', '512 mywireless' and '256 mywireless' users. I hope a few more guys that make use of these services will agree to assist with testing.

Regards,

Rudolph

Hi guys

We still desperately need ‘MW 512’ and ‘512 Unshaped ADSL’ testers. If you are using one of these services please consider helping us with the testing! All other services are also needed (the more tests that are performed the more credible the results).

Regards,

RPM

Hi guys

Everybody that has volunteered to help with testing should have received an email about the testing procedure and testing dates. If you have volunteered and have not received an email please let me know at [email protected] If you have not yet volunteered please consider joining the ‘testing fraternity’. The more testers we have the more accurate and respectable the results will be.

Thanks to all those who have volunteered…I think rating our services and comparing them with International broadband offerings is certainly a step in the right direction!

Regards,

RPM

Hi Bluecollar

As IC mentioned it can be of value in many different ways…to name a few:

 It will assist new users to select the most suitable broadband service
 It will identify weak points in each service which is of value to the providers, users etc.
 It will provide us with an undisputable, concrete way to compare South Africa services to overseas offerings
 It will lay the foundation for future investigations into the QoS of broadband services in South Africa
 It will hopefully provide enough insight that government/ICASA will consider proposing a basic SLA that must be followed by providers.

Regards,

RPM

I just wish there was some easy of doing comparisons between all these test.
Having 8 windows open and alt tabbing all over the place is no fun.

Mine isn't working. I sound like an idiot, but it's not. When I tried to calibrate the first time, it gave some nonsense about having a transparent proxy, etc. and hasn't given a successful test since. I'll uninstall tonight, reinstall and see what gives.

In the options, you can recalibrate. It does it automatically the first time you run it, but you can force it again if you need to. The first time I ran it, it stopped responding.
