I'm looking into buying an external 1TB eSATA drive but my searching experience isn't going that well so far.

First off I was looking at buying the drive separate and popping it in some enclosure but due to my awful history with Vantec, Vizo, etc. bays and the problems we have at work with the Coolermaster ones I decided to rather just go for a full external unit.

First up was the Western Digital My Book Home Edition but after reading numerous reviews about dismounting issues, eSATA problems, overheating and software problems I decided to skip...

Next up was the Seagate FreeAgent Xtreme but the reviews on this one was even worse with plenty of users reporting death within weeks as well as the usual overheating, mounting, disconnecting and freezing problems.

Last was the LuCie designer unit was seemed to have more positive feedback but with many users reporting loud fan noise since the unit does not use passive cooling like the units mentioned above.

So yeah...I'm not really sure. Any recommendations.

Well, I haven't read the WD reviews, but I would buy either a WD or a Toshiba external (don't know if the Toshiba comes in 1TB though). I have confidence in WD and I did read some good stuff on the Toshiba, although I don't know them for the HDD's at all.

But from the options you listed I would go for the WD... Just my 2c worth.

Yeah I was looking at that and according to the reviews it seems okish with USB but has problems with eSATA in terms of losing the connection (has to restart the device) etc. which is really putting me off nevermind the overheating problems.

Same delima here.

I wanted something which comes with both USB2 and eSATA. And most of the 1TB HD only has USB2 or it's too expensive. Thinking about DIY the HD + Enclosure.

So what's wrong with Coolermaster box? The one I had my eyes on is a coolermaster.

I'm getting myself an icydock enclosure for a 500GB or 1TB drive, I've only heard positive things so far about icydock.. unless I'm really bad at searching.

I'm going to recommend something you wouldn't normally consider.

A mecer bravo external drive. I have 750gig version and it's great. Solidly built. Almost no plastic. Just aluminium. It had a samsung drive inside. Copying to it is faster than my internal drives when using esata. I really recommend it.

Seems like that bay in the link does not have eSATA...I'm still pondering on the LaCie unit.
