LCD monitor only comes on for one second?

you're not giving enough info

what type of monitor is it and what is it connected to? what is the resolution setting of the source, have you tried it on different image sources etc etc
 
Well to me it sounds like your monitor/LCD is not receiving the broadcast signal from the PC/Notebook.

1st of all does it completely power off or does the light turn orange or which ever other alternative colour it has ??

Do you see any graphics on the screen i.e. the brand name

Is it plugged into a tower ??

Graphics Card/VGA Cable/Monitor - I would use that order to troubleshoot. (Use another graphics card to test i.e. take & test the monitor on a working machine)

I can tell you what it is not:
  • It is not the graphics card - tested monitor on different machines.
  • It is not the VGA cable - tested with different cable.

The details for the light:
  • When you switch on monitor, light is orange.
  • The light changes to green shortly there after.
  • Monitor screen shows correct desktop details for a second.
  • Light stays on green.

kevf and antowan were on the right track with a power supply issue. But the question still remains, can it be fixed inexpensively?
 
I have no idea where in Port Shepstone you would take it in as I'm not in the area...sorry...I know of places I can enquire although they are not in Port Shepstone....
 
Ask some local tv repair guys and see what they say. Else contact the supplier/manufacturer and ask them who they outsource their fixing of items to and contact them for a quote (which is usually not worth it as these days they just swap out boards instead of doing board level repair).

no, they are not, the fact that the light stays on green is a clue.

ok, do this, get it to the stage where it doesnt work, and now tilt the screen, tilt your head, shine a torch at a funny angle/whatever floats your boat and you will most likely see an image on the screen, as it should be. just without the light from behind to light it up.

there is a slim chance the internal power supply is not supplying the invertor with power, so it cant do its job.

there is a slim chance the backlight is faulty, so although the invertor is working the light is not.

there is a very big chance it is the invertor that is faulty
