You when you buy a movie, and want to rip it, how do they get the whole say 5GB on a DVD.....as I can see the movie quality has dropped a little.

Can I do that?

Movie studios usually publish their movies on dual-layer DVDs. I've seen DVD movie discs that are up to 8GB in size.

Most movies I rip come in between 6 and 8 gigs. Only the very old movies are less than 6gigs.

DVD-9s (dual layer) can be as much as 9GB in size. DVD-5 are single layer = 5GB. You can rip the file and then re-encode it but you will loose out on quality. You can also re-encode it in DivX, xViD or H.264 (AVC) and then you'll
have similar quality at far smaller file sizes.

MPEG-2 the compression codec that DVDs use is very old and better quality for smaller file size can be achieved with DivX, xViD and H.264 codecs. You will need a compatible player to be able to play these back or use your computer.

Handbrake is a nice one and allows you to rip straight to XviD or H264 files.
Setting the quality settings to max on these formats and keeping the resolution at 720by576 (for PAL) will allow you to backup your DVD at a fraction of the size but at optimal quality.

Also try remove the various audio options (foreign language etc), and apply higher compression to extras (making of etc) to reduce the total size of the disk....
 
How to back up Your DVDs and rip your DVD collection to your Hard Drive!

1) Remove Region Protection...
Install this program first... it will remove the copy protection and macrovision while you decrypt... (and will also allow you to watch region protected discs in the future)...

2) To make a backup of a DVD to another DVD...
DVD Decrypter can rip the DVD to your hard drive or make an ISO image...

If DVDDecrypter has problems with a newer DVD install DVD43 (above).
If you have ripped the DVD files to your hard drive, you can then use DVD shrink to make the image smaller and turn it into an ISO file that I can fit onto one DVD... Note: you have to select ISO image as the target file from the drop down menu.

3) To Rip a DVD to an AVI or DivX (XviD) file...
The free version of this program Fair Use Wizard can rip any DVD to a 700 Mb AVI (XVid) File... with just one click...

but.... I find I get a much better quality rip, when I follow these steps...
i) Use DVD Decrypter to rip the DVD to your Hard Drive.
ii) Use DVD Shrink to make an ISO image of the DVD, but turn the compression off completely, in other words, the ISO image will be an exact image of the DVD. Also enable the two extra read options in DVD Shrink to get a better quality image, it is slower, but it pays off. Put that image on a different drive to the one you are going to rip to.
iii) Now use Fair Use Wizard to rip from that unencrypted image in your hard disk. You will get a very high quality rip with no artifacts and no "streaking".
Compare that to a rip straight from the DVD and you will see what I mean. Of course the quality of your DVD drive and speed of your processor is also a factor. 3.0 Ghz strongly recommended!

yup, the audio files can take a lot of space, so i leave only english as my choice of language - i've seen de-selecting a language make my compression rate go from 66% to 75% thus better quality backup
 
What I would love to know is how those flea market guys cram 5 movies at pretty good quality on a regular DVD-5...

The quality is not good. It seems good on a tiny PC monitor but play back the video on a large screen or monitor and you'll see how bad it looks. :)

You can do that too. Compress a video in MPEG2 using Variable bitrate and 2 pass encoding but at about 1-2Mbps.

Probably XviD. As some of the previous posters said, you could get a decent quality rip/encode at 700mb per movie. You could then fit 5 movies on a DVD easily.

I encode most of my DVD's with XviD to average 1.5Gb per movie and to my (untrained, non-specialist) eyes they look close enough to the real thing.

PS Garyvdh mentioned a lot of nice software. Another one worth mentioning is AutoGK - also a one-click type DVD to XviD/DivX encoder. Works great and very easy to use.

What is pretty good quality? Bitrate, resolution, 5.1, DTS, Dolby, Stereo, extras, languages etc? These things all play a role on the file sizes.

I mean good video quality. Obviously they lack the additional languages and only have stereo sound, but I've tried on numerous occasions to create DVD compilations but can never get the same video quality if I have more than 2 or 3 movies.

They run very low bit rate video in Variable Bitrate form. They also mess with the B and I frame options.

You can create the same if you have a good MPEG2 encoder and use VBR with 2 pass encoding, setting highest quality options and experimenting with the bitrate till you're happy. Most good MPEG2 encoders are not free.

Beats me. To compress 5 movies to one DVD with mpeg2 (vob files) I guess you would have to seriously throttle the bitrate and/or the resolution. That should impact heavily on quality, unless it's a very small screen. Actually what peterch said.

In the field of video compression a video frame is compressed using different algorithms with different advantages and disadvantages, centered mainly around amount of data compression. These different algorithms for video frames are called picture types or frame types. The three major picture types used in the different video algorithms are I, P and B. I-frames are the least compressible but don't require other video frames to decode. P-frames can use data from previous I-frames to decompress and are more compressible than I-frames. B-frames can use both previous and forward frames for data reference to get the highest amount of data compression.

Which MPEG2 encoder do you use?

You should post that question on Baldrick's site called www.videohelp.com or www.doom9.org - those guys are pretty clued up.

BTW why not use a program like G-Spot ( http://www.videohelp.com/tools/GSpot ) or MediaInfo ( http://www.videohelp.com/tools/MediaInfo ) to see what the pirates are doing? :)
