I've got a rather unfriendly chap who's gone and put up an internet hotspot less than 100m from one of our 2.4GHz access points.

This wouldn't be so bad if the guy played by the rules, but no, he's gone and parked on the same frequency as us and he's installed a radio made by a Taiwanese setup called Alpha Inc on whatever's inside the box. It may or may not be a routerboard...

But wait it gets better. The radio is pumping out 500mW. It's one of these.

ICASA haven't type approved the radio.
None of the usual suppliers (Scoop, Miro and Uniterm Direct) know or sell the product.

Does anyone have any idea who's importing these things into the country?
 
No idea, but if i was you, id try pull a sneaky and burn it down... teach him for not playing by the rules. If that fails or not the best of idea, send icasa a letter ( altho that will probably get you no where )
 
That reminds me i have to turn down the power on my card. Although it's only 350 mw i don't need that much power, this guy doesn't really play nice :)


can't you go knock on his door ask him if he minds changing the channel? maybe put the power down a little???...
 
Why don't you just change your channel?
 
Bad things will happen to him when ICASA come visiting and ask questions like "Where is the type approval for this radio?" and "Where is your Class ECNS?"

Trying to steal our paying clients.

When a client switches his or her wireless on, our ESSID isn't seen, but his is.

We've all heard of cable theft.
Some of us have heard of people running fibre in ducts belonging to other people.
Now we've got people stealing air.
 
Setup a virtual ap with same ssid as his, will deauth his client and then you can offer them a better service.
 
My buddy and I once caught his neighbor across the street downloading videos through his connection using his (unsecured) WiFi connection.

How strict is icasa about bandwidth theft? A guy I used to know worked for the dept of telecommunications (a leftover after Telkom commercialized) and they used to track illegal radios years ago. Do they still do that?:D
