Checked my mailbox this morning and the postman dropped off a nice bombshell yesterday. I've just received an invoice for local bandwidth used up to the 1st of April.
Total outstanding is a lovely R8 367.00

Fantastic

Since when have Telkom decided to retro-actively apply penalties on local usage? This is the first ever invoice like this I've received, even though it says I have a previous balance due. Looks like they want to charge me for about 100GB of usage from jan thru to march.

Now I have to work up the energy to go screaming at someone on the support line...

Ignoring the fact that I think the law says you can't charge for local usage, I don't see how they can just charge me without any warning

Hahaha. Lovely.

So they charge you around R80/GB for local bandwidth?
Somebody needs a (non) perform bonus.

Where have you been? This has happened to so many people over such a long time and all of them complained on so many sites. I'm sorry to say that you most likely will have to pay the bill.

I've been in and out of the country on work over the last few months. So haven't been watching my accounts or emails. Also the search function does not seem to be working for me today...

Ignorance isn't an excuse.

Telkom do say that they reserve the right to charge.

Nowhere does anything say local is free, it must not be capped.

Did you in fact make use of the amount you are being charged for?

If that amount is purely for local usage, without any interest or other penalties it works out to over 320 gigs :o

Over three months, even on the 4GB unshaped account that's twice the maximum allocated every month (on average)

From what I've gathered people have managed to get away with using just under 150% of thier local allocation without being charged, but even that could change so don't take my word on it (I've never tried it myself)

The usage emails clearly state that they reserve the right to charge for local bandwidth used above the allocated amount. Sorry but you need to pay the devil.

Im sure you were aware of other posts of people being billed for going over their local. Its your own fault

This was the first I heard of them charging for it. If I had known earlier I would have stopped all downloads.

Might as well get SAIX business uncapped for 2 months, but then again it is all the local bandwidth you have used since when ever. What was your average usage per a month?

Compared to our bill, you have problems.

how about a bit of sympathy for the man...

I'm sure there's loads of sympathy, but that's not going to pay his bill.

Out of interest - of the R8k, how much of it was unexpected? ie. what do you normally pay and for what account?

What I don't get is how inconsistent Telkom are with their billing.

um...all of it was unexpected. Normal accounts come on separate invoices. Those are the usual R240odd a month. This was a new invoice with a different account number to all the others. All it has is:

LOCAL BANDWIDTH USED onlineXXXXX so many gigs...so much cash
LOCAL BANDWIDTH USED JAN online xxxx so many gigs...so much cash

Im with silver82. Fact of the matter is people have been posting for how long on being billed for local? Months! It also shows up quite clearly on the usage stats at the bottom.

Dont they send out emails anymore warning you when you are at a certain level? Its been a while since I have seen a thread like this, but there are a few around. From what I can remember, if you went over a certain limit you would be "monitered" If you continued to go over this limit, then you would get charged.

Regardless, even if they didn't send out the emails of warning, as everyone has said, its a known practise, sad as it maybe

Sorry to hear Pox.

Should have used IS bandwidth, It would have cost you less.
Hope you get it sorted!

ouch, and what are Telkom charging you per gig?

I go over by about 5-10gb a month, eeek.
