View Full Version : 2010 Coke Fest

Ok so the 2009 Coke fest has just sucke.... finished...
(any thoughts on that by the way)
So I'm interested to know what people now expect from the next one? Seems it went from Spectacular (Metallica, Seether, Staind, 30 Seconds to Mars, Korn, Muse) i.e. "Good Music" to something your little sister will listen to at her 14th birthday party (Panic!, Snow Partol <GAWD, they are depressing> )
or is it just me!?
as a general rule of thumb, i would suggest to Big Concerts, that for coke fest, if the bands music is being played to death on Highveld, and to a lesser extend, 5fm.... they should not be at coke fest?
Just my 2 cents for 2010:
1.) Flyleaf
2.) Red Hot Chilli Peppers
3.) Green Day
4.) Linkin Park <if they still exist????>
5.) Killswitch Engage.....
NOW That will be a nice coke fest..... :D :D

I would agree for killswitch and linkin park but maybe inflames (or is that just to naughty) :o
My ultimate Coke Fest would never happen due to it being "too metal" so if I had to choose a lineup that would actually theoretically be possible I'd choose:
Tool
Foo Fighters
Queens of the Stone Age
Linkin Park
Iron Maiden
*edit*
If I could just pick any five bands to play at a show:
Opeth
Gojira
Lamb of God
Tool
Amon Amarth
And who is going to pay for your whitey concert?
Cause i like the black guys here at work but they struggle with Metal just like i struggle with hipidty hopity stuff
And who is going to pay for your whitey concert?
They've all been "whitey" concerts so far at Coke Fest (whatever that means - I know quite a few black people who are into rock/alternative/metal).
The_Pumpkin_King
15-04-2009, 03:41 PM
Foo Fighters
Linkin Park
Slipknot
Chilli Peppers
holy crap i would die!

It seems a bit harsh slapping the colour label on it, Coke fest started out as an alternative music festival.... nobody is forced to listen to alternative, it's a choice, (as my dad always says "Dankie tog, smaak verskil")!! :p
if black people pitch up there next to us, and enjoy the music as much as we do, i will sure as hell mosh a 'ding raak' with them :)
It's just fair we "alternatives" get a festival, i mean, dstv shows MTV (which is mainstream, beyonce etc etc etc), MTV BASE (African music, hip hop etc etc) TRANCE (or whatever that channel is called) same as the above 2, VH1, old music, and MK (K@K music)
So the only thing we "alternatives" have... is this one festival a year...
o, btw... the lead singer from Killswitch, is a AAA (angry african american) !!!
loving their music though....

i have 5 black friends who listen to louder music than myself.
but anyways, i'd love to see killswitch engaged and pearl jam at the next fest, maybe some tool and rammestein

Yeah the second part I can't see happening in SA in the next few years...
THE ONE THING I'M GLAD SO FAR ABOUT: nobody has suggested one of these bands that played this year (i exclude Oasis, they are awesome) but the rest was *****e.....

Haha, and what is white music, and what is black music? When you compare Eminem, and Killswitch?
I think music is the one thing that cant be racially motivated (if that makes any sense), people like the music they like....
I'm an Afrikaner from a small town, but i throw things at people when they play Jurie, or flashpoints, or Kurt Darren... (well mostly, any karoke "afrikaanse" musiek  )
We all just like the music we like, its not black, its not white.... its just music

To each his own, I love At the Drive In, The Mars Volta and Sparta (Remaining members of ATDI)
To answer your question bizkit:
Mars Volta are a progressive rock band who write concept albums. There music is punk rock, jazz fusion, funk and some salsa thrown in for good measure.
Alexisonfire - Canadian post-hardcore band easily accesible. Its pretty much your screamo type music but its pretty energetic. Should give them a listen

And it's been awhile
Since I could hold my head up high
And it's been awhile
Since I first saw you
And it's been awhile
Since I could stand on my own two feet again
And it's been awhile
Since I could call you
And everything I can't remember
As ****ed up as it all may seem
The consequences that I've rendered
I've stretched myself beyond my means
And it's been awhile
Since I can say that I wasn't addicted
And it's been awhile
Since I can say I love myself as well
And it's been awhile
Since I've gone and ****ed things up just like I always do
And it's been awhile
But all that **** seems to disappear when I'm with you
And everything I can't remember
As ****ed up as it all may seem
The consequences that I've rendered
I've gone and ****ed things up again
Four Walls lyrics
The thoughts from my mind
Command my lips say I hate you
The thoughts from my mind
Command my hands to cut your silken flesh
The thoughts from my mind
Command my feet to stomp your head
The thoughts from my mind have one question...
When will this ever end?
[CHORUS:]
Not much to the life I live
Same 4 Walls
I have nothing left to give
Please take it all away....
Same 4 Walls
The thoughts from my mind
Feel the pain as rats claw at my flesh
The thoughts from my mind
Feels the joy as the needls hits my vein
The thoughts from my mind
Smells the stench as **** runs down my leg
The thoughts from my mind ask for sanity
Now for this I beg
Crawl lyrics
I'm so lonely
You're so beautiful
Not the only
One that's pitiful
Scratched and torn I lay here in pieces
Craving all of your deadly vices
Like to think that I'm not addicted
But I guess I wear it well
And I crawl
While you spit
And I crawl
Through you
Here I am now
Not a lot has changed
Nothing' better
Everything's the same
Late at night I can hear your voices
Talking **** about all my choices
You would think you've known me forever
Just because you know my name
And I crawl
While you spit
And I crawl
Through you
Everything falls apart
Everything... [3x]
Everything falls apart
Everything [3x]

Rasputin
Graveworm
Love lies bleeding
Black Label Society
Down
And local band to fit in : Juggernaught

Coke Fest is clearly not a winning format.. Get the bands one by one, with a local support act. Better. The whole day is also a little draining. Maybe I'm just getting old :p

The one band format doesn't work too well, most of the time the have a hard time filling up the dome, i.e. when Offspring was here, and with Live etc...
Or maybe they should move to longer format (oppikoppi/Rock AM Ring) type thing? .... just a thought...

Well almost all of them are sludge core/stoner metal (think black sabbath, the good ol black sabbath when ozzy was still the vocalist), the rest are mostly alternate metal, southern hard rock and doom/death metal.
Best place to look is www.last.fm there you will find streaming samples of all these bands. Another cool band is dirge, especially the meridian ep

1. Flyleaf <i dig this chick to pieces>
2. Foo Fighters <who wouldn't want to see Mr. Grohl live>
3. RHCP < they are awesome live>
4. Killswitch Engage <good band to work over some anger issues!>
5. Deftones <to get heart rate back to normal after 4>
6. Seether <we have to have them at this "amazing" 2 day festival>
7. Rise Against < check them out if you don't know them>
8. Slipknot < haha, stirring the pot, but stuff it, i like them>
9. Kings of Leon < they can only play 3 songs of their new album though>
10.Chevelle <can't believe they haven't been mentioned?>
11. Breaking Benjamin <awesome band...>
that will cover the main acts for 2 days? with some new/unknown/local bands thrown in between... could work.... :)

'Blink 182 ... are (sic) the band that got me into this music'
What exactly is this music? Blink-182 is not an alternative band? It is a 'pop punk' - whatever that means - band. Do you seriously mean to suggest that Blink-182 could fall into the same category as previous headliners like Muse and Metallica?
Thumbs up to everyone that mentioned Tool. Someone made a comment in last year's equivalent to this thread that he would sacrifice everyone on this forum to see Tool live. I concur. But anyway, here's my list:
1) Radiohead
2) Metallica (I know, they were here, but still...)

I fail to understand people's affinity for Rammstein. It strikes me as one of those rebel bands everyone digs because everyone else digs them and because it's showing your non-conformity to dig a rebel band.
When you actually understand the meaning of their lyrics, it kinda kills it even more so.

I didn't go to Cokefest 09 because that was too much cash to only see Oasis! Had Bullet and Red Jumpsuit not jumped ship, I would have been there!
My request list for 2010:
Slipknot
Killswitch Engage
Rise Against
Funeral For A Friend
Foo Fighters
Linkin Park
Metal pretty much has no chance in SA - just not cost effective for most of them to tour. Most of them pretty much come to SA on a kind of 'working holiday' vibe.
Pay your cash - go to europe for 10 days and catch a two real full weekend metal fests. Seen almost every band I want to in the last 4 years of metal fest pilgrimage.
Off to watch soulfly, manson, motley crue, amon amarth, manowar, wasp, gorgoroth (god seed), gojira, sacred reich etc et etc in june this year. All in about 140 bands over 2 weekends. Plus as a extra perk we're catching AC/DC's last tour in amsterdam arena
last year caught iron maiden, priest and KISS.
Plus with the EU crowd not everyone wants to donder everyone all the time in hatfield style.
BTW, Opeth are crap live. Good band, but not a great LIVE band

Yup, caught them in 2006 - had to run and watch half set of Cradle as well. Not touring this year afaik. She's a fricken monster! One of the best, still want to watch a full set.
Really looking forward to a full set of Cradle this year, and holy crap - MANOWAR! Theres a lot of thrash/gore/black on the lineup this year... should be great.
@BCO:
It was blackwater park era in 2006. I think if they were the only band I saw they would've been awesome but after some of the other bands they just put me to sleep. They were supposed to play last year as well but pulled out last minute
BTW: apparently when bullet pulled out of coke 2009, they actually had alerted the coke organisers quite a while before it was publicised... but that would affect ticket sales then wouldn't it...

Yeah I think maybe at a very high energy metal festival with a lot more brutal bands playing faster/shorter songs Opeth might seem a bit slow and chilled.
On their own though, I would love to see them.

metallica
Hoobastank

Korn
machine head

Cradle of Filth
Soulfly
Pennywise
36 Crazyfists

Dev - where'd you catch bands? UK?
Yeah most at the 2004 download fest :D
Was awesome!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Download_Festival
yeah, I've hit Graspop fest in Belgium every year since 2006 & this year again with a turn at Hellfest in france then AC/DC in Amsterdam.
Now that the pound has taken a well deserved beating I'll look into Download a bit more. Nothing beats 60 000 metalheads just partying.

i SO wish CF 2010 can learn from these okes. I'm planning on going here, should finances allow it: Line-up:
Kings of Leon
Kaiser Chiefs
Placebo
Deftones!!!!
Funeral for a friend
Arctic Monkeys
Prodigy
Radio Head
Bloc Party
Lost Prophets
AFI
Billy Talent
Anti Flag
AND BEST OF ALL
RISE AGAINST

For more chilled music check out Rock Werchter and Pukkelpop in Belgium. They've had some killer lineups and usually quite a bit cheaper than UK fests.
Very good mix of dance/pop/rock/metal. Something for anyone.
THIS is the kind of lineup that CF just don't seem to understand. They barely get 3 band of any real calibre and buffer it with bands I can see any night of the week anywhere in JHB.

Read faggy, emo, cross dressers who have taken "creativity" so far that it has become totally incomprehensible.
Sample lyrics:
"My nails peel back
When the taxidermist ruined
Goose stepped the freckling impatience
All the brittle tombs
Five hundred little q’s
I’m splitting hairs to
Match the faces "
"mputechture came
philistine praise
bottomless pit of empty names
incarcerated habits pour from the palms
severing the breast
nursing all the young"
"this dirt
is turning Christ to make repent again
so i've heard
they're cutting all the youngest ones
said this dirt
is turning Christ to make repent his lust
so i've heard
that the puppet tugs its pull"
Those are just three random verses. It is as coherent as they get.

2009 CF was a fail. Was gonna come up from Durban mainly just to see Bullet...but ja. Instead, I got my R300 refunded and got wasted on that weekend haha.
I would love to go to a proper metal fest like Wacken or something, just not that affordable atm, when I'm earning then I'll definetely save up.
Bands I'd love to see:
As I Lay Dying <--- Gods of Metalcore in my opinion
All That Remains
August Burns Red
Avenged Sevenfold
Bring Me The Horizon
Darkest Hour
Killswitch Engage
Lamb of God
Parkway Drive
DevilDriver
Slayer
Job for a Cowboy
Carnifex
As Blood Runs Black
Suicide Silence
In Flames
Also, I do not consider Rock/Metal as white music at all. I'm a huge death/metal/core fan and I'm not white, unfortunate that there aren't more like me though.
Btw, what is considered stoner-metal? I love All That Remains when baked.

+1 for flyleaf, they're really great.
Bullet for my Valentine was supposed to come this year but they all of a sudden just decided that they're too "busy". i was p'd off much to say.:(
Lol how about bands like:
Coheed and Cambria
Nightwish (Tarja is gone, new sucky singer but i still love their sound)
Rage Against the Machine
Underoath
Haste the Day

Good, gives them a year to think about what they did wrong. The very first coke fest was the best, every year after that it went downhill until it hit rock bottom.
MY suggestion - rather give me two top class acts rather than a couple of sucky "has beens". I thought the selection of local artist was very good, some even out performed their international counterparts.

Yeah, Last year's sure sucked with the weak lineup.
Will have too what they have in store for us in 2011.

As for the race thing that is BS this is why our country will not move forward, I have seen many black ppl rocking out as well as many white ppl getting their hip hop on. Music does not see colour, creed, religion or sex it is what speaks to our souls.
