Starting a Laptop rental business

My brother wants to start a business renting out laptops. I am not sure if it will work; he says that it will. I am worried about the cost of supporting the devices (the rental includes OS support), insurance and maintenance.

My opinion as to whether people would even rent notebooks is also skewed since I know I would rather purchase the item than rent it.

Any comments??
 
I reckon people will trash them, like they trash rental cars. His insurance will cost a bomb. One way it could work if is he sourced DIRT cheap lappies, such as repos or factory seconds, and fixed them himself.

No-one treats someone else's property as well as they treat their own, especially if they are paying for it.
 
There are already companies that do this for corporates. Leasing of all types of computer hardware.

Like Grouter said - the people won't look after the stuff and everyone will expect a 'new' looking laptop. You'll be lucky if you get 6-12months out of each device before you have to scrap it. Don't know if people would be willing to pay the kind of rental prices required to recover your costs on that.

True.Renting is all about ROI and nothing else.

Imo it is a bad idea and not feasible as a standalone business.
 
Like someone said - supporting rentals ten to one means re-imiging the hdd everytime you get it back... lots of schlepp...
