Some initiatives to start of 2005

Hi folks

I would just like to inform you that I have started the New Year with a press release regarding Telkom’s ‘refusal’ to lower the cost of ADSL despite the lower cost of international bandwidth & DSL equipment and the stronger rand. I am not certain if it will be published as many of my media contacts were still on holiday, but lets hope it does see the light. I think lower prices for ADSL and other broadband services should be the main focal point for this year, but as always your views will govern our direction.

I have also invited the Department of Communication and ICASA to partner with us regarding the QoS of broadband in South Africa. It will be ideal if they can get involved and use our information to enforce a strict SLA for all broadband services offered. I am not too optimistic that this will happen soon, but it is always good to explore all avenues…

I will keep you informed about any further communications. Your comments are most welcome as always…

RPM - do you have or intend establishing formal links between MyADSL and CUASA, ISPA, VANSA, CSSA, CSIR, etc.? Or do you deem it preferable to remain clearly independent? The basis for the query is that common objectives are that much more easily attainable, given proof positive of broad-based support from a wide range of affected users, despite diverse organisational objectives...

MBS: I will certainly look into strategic partnerships with CUASA, ISPA etc. on certain issues. It definitely gives a campaign more respectability when all the major players are involved.

IC: My main concern about thread polling is that too many polls will be opened. A solution to this problem will be if only mods can open polls, but this will mean more work for them (not good). I will give the matter some thought…maybe open polling and see how it goes?

I have to agree with RPM here. If you enable polls then every Tom, Dick and Harry runs his own little poll and it becomes a mess.

Moderators should be in charge of polls and if a user has a poll they wish to run, they should contact a moderator to do so.

A possible workaround: you could create an "Official Polls forum", which allows all of us to vote, but only the mods can create the polling (or any) threads in the Official Polls forum. This would still allow T,D&H to create polls elsewhere but it would keep them from messing up the Official Polls forum controlled by the mods.

Take a look at Christian Forums - they have done exactly that, with great success. I tend to ignore the T,D & H polls, and answer those posted in the Official Polls Forum.

Lower Costs

I definitely support this as the main issue this year. Lets hope its the last year we need to focus on this. Affordable broadband for all South Africans should be our main goal.
