Which is the best cpu upgrade in the long term?

AM3 will probably last longer but the quad core is more powerful... You should actually be going for a Phenom II AM3 Quad core. That will last the longest. Also note that although the AM3's cache size is a lot bigger, the CPU is not really cache dependant (pick up an April edition of PC Format and you'll find that out)

Q9550 is a good cpu performs well you just need a good board for it and it will last you a very long time.Im stuck wid a G31 now :( my other board got fried.

AMD, chop, not Intel. He's talking about the Phenom X4 9550, not any Intel Quad.

AMD - Intel tends to change its mind (if it really had one) every five minutes - and is still waiting for a 1600 fsb to catch

my cousin got himself a Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition and it is hell of a fast. he OC'd to 4.0ghz and got almost the same performance as the Q9650. Cost: R2800

I say take the tri. It's only 1800 anyway.

yea i know but if you look at 9950 price you will see there is only a R100 difference. this one of the reasons I posted this thread in the 1st place.

and according to this

without any oc the 9950 will out preform the 720 X3. And Like i said am not planning on doing any OC.So in the end I still think i would be better off with a 9950.

thanks for all the reply's
