Motlanthe told the crowd that the "voting patterns in 2009's national poll disturbingly reflected our old divided past; which only goes to show that more work still needs to be done to de-racialise our society in all its essentials".

IFP national spokesperson Musa Zondi described the statement as unfortunate.

"As the father of the nation, for him to make that statement is really sad. Is he implying that if a person votes for a party that is led by a white person, then that person is racist?" he asked.

"It appears that as long as you vote ANC, then you are a true democratic and you are not racist, but if you vote any other party, then you are racist. That sort of thinking is bad for our country," he said.

Newly elected DA leader in KwaZulu-Natal parliament, John Steenhuisen, said the ANC was in the habit of "pulling out the race card whenever their backs are against a wall".

A very politically immature response to their loss of votes. This has become very expected of the ANC, however.

The ANC should not blame racism for losing votes in the 2009 elections, but should rather look at the party's performance over the past 15 years, opposition parties and analysts said on Monday.

"The fact of the matter is the DA has stopped them from achieving a two-thirds majority nationally, and we won the Western Cape from them. People voted based on a party's performance and not for a particular race group," he said.

I agree with Rivonia Naidu over about this. It has little to do with race, except that the ANC has nothing to offer White people.

This, he said, was because there was still a lot of mistrust among South Africans.

The ANC has not created the utopian society is promised and much now be brought to book. Changes are in the works and by next election we might see a really different picture.

I think most DA supporters are have a colonialist mindset if not racist.

He never said anti-ANC voters are racist
He never said anything even close to that (at least not in the quote given in the OP), I think people are being really petty and ridiculous here.

Of course they're racist. Just ask any of the ANC supporters on this forum.

After I read the first paragraph quoted by the OP, it does sound like the little chief is implying what Musa Zondi is asking.

Are anti-ANC voters racist?

The uneducated masses will believe everything they are told.

don't ever quote the anc. They don't take responsability for their own words.

in feckt : when has the anc ever admitted they were wrong?

Musa Zondi of the IFP should be asking himself why so many black people chose not to vote for another black man (Mangosuthu Buthelezi).

According to the quote the president would like to see black people voting white parties and vice versa. So far the trend is that the DA (majority white party) did well in white areas and the ANC (majority black party) did well in majority black and rural provinces like Limpopo and Mpumalanga.
Since when is a call for "de-racialising society" pulling the race card?

I think the exact opposite.

ANC voters are racist. The ANC as a whole runs on reverse Racism. Where as the DA is the true racist free party in SA. And the people are getting smarter as time passes. The DA will before we die of old age run this country one day. Mark my words :)

The masses are getting educated and realise the true potential of SA is not with the ANC but a better place for everyone of all races ;)

Well if that's the case i am a racist through and through.

Anti-ANC = Racist ? Malema logic playing there.

I think it is safe to say that we are still a very racially motivated country so i don't think Motlanthe is very far off. This forum has shown countless racial remarks. With that said Jungleboy has a very valid point. I think people have misinterpreted what he meant.

You can't deny the fact that white people vote for parties with white leaders while black people vote for parties with black leaders.
They know that, and they want to support their voters best interests. Its a catch 22 and its not going to change soon.
