I really believe Telkom deploying a wimax network is bad news for internet in SA. If wimax delivers on its promise it will be the dominant wireless last mile solution. Do we really want a Telkom monopoly in the wired and wireless market?? Telkom have the financial muscle to undercut any competion and once they have the monopoly we will be stuffed.

We dont want Telkom as a monopoly, but its not upto us to decide but the other wireless service providers must try to keep their existing customers and also lure new ones by offering what they promise in the first place and at the right price ofcourse!

It would be great to have WiMax (although this thing about signals travelling through walls with ease, also means travelling through bodies with ease- long term radiation effects...), but I definitely don't want Telkom to have control over a WiMax offering- it hands Telkom the local bandwidth market on a platter.

IMO, exactly the reason why Telkom is doing WiMax - to regain monopolistic control of the local market.

I haven't had time to figure out whether ICASA has granted Telkom a WiMax licence yet, we should be petitioning ICASA & whoever else will listen to revoke or never issue such a licence to Telkom.

Seriously, I often wonder about all the hoopla over radio waves, considering the earth is bombarded by different types of radiation from all over the show, much of which passes straight through the earth, let alone the body !

I'm totally against the Monopoly and I would way prefer to give my business so someone more deserving than Telkom but if I look at things from a personal and financial view point, I really don't care who offers the service, as long as it's reliable and reasonably priced. Unfortunately in our case, as long as Telkom is in power, that will probably never happen, but who knows what happens in the future.

The Telkom monopoly is slowly being eroded - the pace of change maybe glacial, but it is happening.

A few years back, the very idea of a Sentech or WBS would've been impossible.

I believe this is a good thing. If wimax is so much better than all the other wireless offerings and customers move back to Telkom for wireless, it will force the other wireless internet providers to pull up their socks and provide us with better internet.

I hate to say it, but I have now reached the point where I don't give a hoot what is legal or illegal in the wireless market. If I want to connect to a friend a couple of blocks away from me with wireless, I am going to do it. Screw Telkom, screw the minister and screw those corrupt brainless morons that keep Telkom in its comfy position. I believe the SNO will be a sham and I now officially do not care any more. I encourage everybody to go out and connect with any commercially available wireless tech they have at their disposal. We must however be careful not to mess with emergency services and air traffic frequencies.

I would like to see Telkom come after a million or so wirelessly connected people!

My signal is going live in Centurion at the end of this month.
