US Rebates on Kits and Lenses

Canon USA seem to be having instant rebates on a few camera kits and lenses. The 50D + 18-200IS is rebated by $300 so the landed price is about R17600 vs R19995 at orms.

The 70-200 2.8 IS works out to +- R 16600 vs R 22995 at orms... hmmm.
 
Just be careful, the rebates are usually country-specific.

The normal rebates are almost always country specific, where you have to mail in a form to receive the rebate. These are instant rebates. From my understanding, the rebates are issued to the suppliers. So effectively they just lower the selling price.

I'd still query it with them. The quote I gave is from the B&H instant rebate popup.

B&H responded and said that the instant rebates are applicable to international orders as well. Hmmm... anyone here using the 70-200 F2.8 IS? Online reviews are very positive, but quite a few negative reviews saying the lens is over-hyped, pics are a bit soft and rather recommend the 135L F2.8 or the 85L 1.8.

There is no duty on lenses so just VAT and whatever handling fee the courier charges.
 
I can vouch for B&H. I bought a 55-250mm IS lense and with courier shipping and customs duties I saved +- R2000 if bought locally.

Delivery time was just over a week.

It's lens.

My last lens from b&h was stuck in customs for two weeks.
 
Ah, thanks for getting clarity!

Reading on DPR, it sounds as though B&H has pulled a bit of a skelm with the instant rebates. They pushed their prices up just before adding the rebate, so price has remained the same. I'll post the links when I get onto DPR.

My BiL has a 70-200 IS F2.8 and he's very chuffed with it. I used it once, and it weighs as much as my Bigma. :eek: WRT primes, they will usually always be sharper.

From what I've read its what canon does in general. They raise the prices after the christmas rush in feb and then have rebates in may. So essentially things are the same price. I'm still impressed that for a landed cost the 70-200 F2.8 IS can be R6k cheaper than local!! The 50D kits are only about R1k cheaper so its better to buy local and get the guarantee.

I landed my 16-35 at a savings of about R6k too. One thing to remember is, unlike the camera bodies, the lens warranty is international. :)
