Telkom Wimax just installed and working beautifully

Hey guys

Just thought I'd post my Wimax experience. I ordered my Wimax service about 5 weeks ago and the installation contractors finally came today to install it. All in all took about 4 hours for them to install cos they were stuggling to find a signal, but now it's working perfectly exactly as it says on the box.

Just to let you know, I've also got a perfectly good ADSL fixed line at home too, but I plan to cancel that ASAP and completely get rid of the land line. So will only pay R250 per month for Wimax rental.

I had no problems ordering Wimax from Telkom despite some other posters saying they had problems. They didn't even ask me if I already had a landline or an ADSL connection although I did place my order via fax by downloading the application form from the website and faxing it to them. I think this might be the best way to order Wimax.
 
What sorta speed do you get?
What can you do with local I just cancelled mine!
 
It's a standard Telkom 512kbps Wimax connection, prob get about 58 - 60kBps downloading.

I'm already splitting my bandwidth between a prepaid semi-shaped and prepaid local account from Axxess using a WRT54GL router, it's works brilliantly and completely seamlessly. No fiddling around with Routesentry required as it's all done on the router.

Next thing on the list is to find a decent SIP VOIP provider to use on my Wimax connection in order to replace my landline. Any suggestions?

I have been using a Screamer fixed line phone for about 4 months now and it works fine.
 
can anyone point me in the direction of some information for if WiMax can be used for computer games?

Alright after being lazy I checked through some of the forums and found a few threads about gaming and the pings look decent at least if there are no ports in my area for DSL I may have to go this route.

Instead does anyone have first hand experience with pings and connectivity in the Craighall park sandton, I stay maybe 2km's from Hyde park shopping centre just off Jan smuts.

WIMAX gaming

Living in CT area and been using wimax for COD4/5, local servers i average about 70ms, foreign servers anything from 300 up, :)
 
Hey Parky, I sent you a PM. What does your lagometer look like? Do you have packet loss with it? And what do you think of the hit reg?
 
Just curious, Wimax is sounding rather tasty to me at the moment.....

What are the costs involved i.e. equipment wise ??

One question that I'm asking myself is should I move how easy is it to set-up the wireless side of things can it be done DIY style or can you use another company other than Telkom......

From what I can gather they give you the wireless antenna and some other converter box :confused:
 
Here is a quick cost breakdown:

Install - R543.89

Rental - R240.00

Bandwidth - R???.?? (depends on the ISP you choose)

You do not pay for the equipment as it stays the property of Telkom. They also have to do the install as it requires a fix pole to be mounted on your outside wall, external unit mounted on the pole, cable run from the external unit to the room where you want it and connection made to the indoor unit which they have to mount on your inside wall.

The setup is similair to an ADSL modem so you will have to either use a PPPOE connection from your computer or buy a router that does the PPPOE connection for you.

What is the waiting period that Telkom says it will take for installation & how long have you guys waited.

I know deweyzeph waited 5 weeks.....
 
Well when I ordered my WiMax back in October last year I was told 10 working days after they phone you back to confirm the order. Mine took much longer than that though. Since then I have heard people quoting 1 month after order confirmation.

The only other company that I know of that is offering decent WiMAX is Screamer telecoms.

Their pricing is:

Once off: R2450 for installation and equipment

Monthly: broadband packages ranging from R49 to about R2000 for uncapped but check on their web site www.screamer.co.za

Installation is about 24hrs

There's one crucial problem with Screamer....they don't service Cape Town and can't even be bothered to answer my requests for information about when they will be available here.
 
The 24 hours sounds great......

Their broadband packages aren't great, so for a saving of R30 per month I would need to outlay R2450......

R 2450.00 will be kind of steep if I am to move in a few months time & install again O_o
 
Just called Telkom to install WiMax and they said its been put on Hold.... WTF...

Guys, don't call Telkom to order Wimax. The best way to do it is to print out the application form and fax it to them. That way you don't have to deal with the call centre who are notorious for not even knowing what Wimax is. You can also get around the restriction on having Wimax in an ADSL-enabled area this way.
