it was reported on the 702 five pm traffic that a man had jumped off the Nelson Mandela bridge in Braamfontein and that he had supposedly been hit by six cars. A few minutes later a caller said that a student had jumped off a bridge near Smit street, later eye wtinesses said that he had survived.

Does anyone have more info?

If you jump off the Nelson Mandela Bridge don't you land on train tracks?

I also thought that... so the second report must be more correct.

Funny thing is... I have heard nothing else on the radio or on the news.

The macabre side of me wants to know if he died... and the humane side of me wants to know if he lived?

Bemore Gardens does not have any bridges.

exctly but im pretty sure i heard the women who phoned in 702 say near benmore gardens some where, well sounds a bit off. As there has been no news reports.

Which personality do you usually go with?

He jumped from the amic deck at wits campus. He is ok, but badly injured - secondhand info but I think reliable

Odd i was at wits about the time of the call and i didnt see any thing out of the ordinary.. where abouts is the amic deck in relation to the wits campus?

He is a student at Wits University. He is in hospital in a stable condition. At this point it is unsure whether he jumped or fell in a scuffle. The incident happend around 17:30 yesterday. The student landed on a vehicle on the M1 below. No one else was injured in the incident.

It crosses the highway between the East Campus (next to the Wedge parking area) towards West Campus and the sports complexes.

Sorry, as I said second hand info. I don't know where the amic deck is and 2cents seems to know more than me.

The Amic deck is that wide pedestrian bridge between the southern parking lot on the sturrock park side and the walkway that leads past the engineering faculty to the great hall.

ja, I would not put his number on here... there is a rule against that kind of stuff... and I wouldn't quote the number either.

But good luck to him anyway. Glad to hear he is alive.

i have no sympathy for suicide people, i have been through more crap in my life than most people can dream about, and i haven't tried to off myself or even thought about it.

On the other note , its good that he is ok but now he will most likely have hindered his life in some manner, now he will be even more depressed or whatever his reasoning's where, so its only a matter of time.. - I've had two friends kill themselves, the one guy tried once didnt succeeed, walked into his room and he was hanging from his tie dead, cold, lifeless, so yeah..

Can you be any more insensitive semaphore? Or are you looking for attention? Seriously, rather keep your opinions to yourself in situations like this.

actually, I agree with semaphore. Suicide is an extremely egotistical and selfish thing to do. I have also lost several family members to suicide. I can't think of a more pointless and stupid thing to do. It accomplishes nothing except putting the family through pain and difficulty for a few weeks. After that, they just resent you for your stupidity.

If you are depressed or need help, then get help or go help others. The easiest way to get out of depression is to find a way to help others. Go to your local hospital and volunteer, or take a first aid course, or go to an orphanage and help out for a few hours a week... you will soon see your misery fade away when you see how others are much worse off than you ... and they still want to go on with life.

seriously, if you are thinking about killing yourself, just stop and think.
1) you are going to put your family or other people through some pointless work, admin and difficulty. That paramedic would rather be helping genuine accident victims than some self-inflicted individual. That oxygen, blood, bandages would be better off used on someone who genuinely needs it than you. His time could be better served helping others. The time to go to your funeral could be better used being productive at work, rather than taking a morning off to go to your pointless funeral where people actually resent you for being so self-absorbed.
2) your funeral policy or your life-insurance is not going to pay out when you commit suicide. Others are going to have to bear your expense. The least you could do is to save up twenty thousand rand in cash before you die so they will have some money to bury you with.
3) jumping off a bridge or shooting yourself is stupid since there is chance others may get injured. So not only do you take your own life, but you end up taking someone else's as well and you become no better than a murderer.

of course none of this applies to the guy that this thread is about since we don't actually know what happened in that case... but anyway. The point is valid. Suicide is an extremely selfish and stupid thing to do. Grow a pair. Get a job and become a productive member of society.

I agree with you Garyvdh but this is not the place to discuss it. Rather start a new thread. I replied because semaphore's posts lately have been pretty distasteful.

Do you really think that saying "Grow a pair. Get a job and become a productive member of society" or "i have no sympathy for suicide people, i have been through more crap in my life than most people can dream about, and i haven't tried to off myself or even thought about it" will pull someone out of a severe depression? Rather try give constructive advise like where to go to get some help and leave it to the professionals. Or how about a description of how you have overcome something that has been life crushing?
