Estimated Cost of website

I have a freight who need a website setup...

Basically a shell, with a catalog of their products..
no cart, no creditcard payments...

just 1500 product with descriptions and pictures..

any Idea on a cost ?
 
Should cost a few k for someone to set the cart etc up and do a bit of modification of the templates etc to get it customised for the company. Adding products is a pain so you could either do that yourself or get the secretary or someone to do it.
 
Well if we have to put in the products ourselves, it could get quite expensive, but we can design a CMS system that will allow your friend to put the products in themselves which will work out a lot cheaper.
 
yeah there should be an interface that allows the client to add products to the CMS...

So are we looking sub 10 grand ?
anyone recommend a company do the work

Do it yourself for free with Zen Cart or osCommerce :D. Choose a template you like, there are lots, both for free and for sale, and then get a design company to modify it to your satisfaction.

I think that would be your quickest and cheapest route, and then, when you want to add a payment gateway, you have lots of options (http://www.zen-cart.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=40_48&sort=20a&page=1).

It's all in php with mySQL, so you should be able to get hosting at a good price, and there is lots of tutorials and help out there for both products.
 
Design a CMS system? There are plenty of CMS systems out there, just waiting to be configured for you! greggpb, have you considered doing it yourselves, and outsourcing the site design (ok, and maybe the actual setup of the CMS if you don't know how/don't have the time)?
 
Web development is not my forte, I am just advising a friend and would like to find a reputable person to help them. I don't have the time to do a site..

Already look at zen car.. would probalyy just be looking for someone to build a zencart/jamoola/ droopla template for them.. so they could add products and descriptions.. and then integrats it into a basic statc site template.

Yeah, I guess. The price is excellent though, the price also includes graphic design by the way (logo, etc, etc.) Like that Kariba logo, he did that for the guy himself.

I've done three sites with this guy already and all of them look great. Anyone else quotes me between 10k and 15k for the same thing.

It's difficult to find a good developer, specially with limited technical knowledge, like myself. :o

Where does your guy stay and does he have a "normal" job as well. I need a website in the near future and logos as well. Maybe he can help me out. :D

He's based in Sandton. I think he actually works from home, doing graphic design if I remember correctly. Usually meets me at News Cafe or something like that, we discuss what I want, he comes and takes pictures if need be, and that's that. Oh yeah, I usually pay 50% deposit.

He usually throws in free design for letterheads and cards as well. Really cool guy. :)

I would recommend Joomla & Virtuemart, a bit more user-friendly than osCommerce & Zen.

Get the guy to set it up (Home page, Contact us, about etc.. a few products) R2k (this will take any guru less then a day).
Buy a nice template for 15- 60 dollars. (there are some great ones)
Staff can add products. Money saved - 2-2.5k
Logo design, R350 - R750
Total cost 2.5 - 3.5k depending on template, and logo

All done.
 
I can highly recommend ThorStudios who did all my design work. They have a brilliant admin panel set up that allows you to have a custom design done, and from there you can do everything else easily.

You can chose how many pages you want, rename pages, edit content on pages, add/remove newsletter sign ups, catalogues, galleries etc. It's a brilliant system for I think less than 5k - I stand to be corrected.
