Nelspruit - The DA and Cope have condemned the Mpumalanga government's promotion of escort agencies as a business venture to serve visitors during the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

Provincial DA leader Anthony Benadie warned this week that there were potentially dangerous consequences of legalising prostitution.

"The most significant is the potential it has for opening up avenues for human trafficking," Benadie warned.

Mpumalanga's 2010 deputy director general Desmond Golding has publicly stated that, while illegal, both escort services and human trafficking would be lucrative business opportunities for 2010.

"Prostitution is an economic opportunity, but it is illegal and immoral. Human trafficking, as well, is an economic opportunity, but it is illegal and immoral," he said.

Golding said national government was still deciding whether to legalise prostitution for the duration of the World Cup between June and July 2010.

Call to register for 2010

The Mbombela local municipality in Nelspruit has already called for escorts to register their services for 2010.

Benadie said should prostitution be legalised, then HIV awareness programmes and those that address other sexually transmitted diseases had to be stepped up urgently.

He said measures also needed to be taken to prevent human trafficking, drug trafficking and paedophilia and that tourists should be discouraged from using escorts .

"In a province such as Mpumalanga, struggling with dangerously high rate of teenage pregnancy and grappling to restore sound moral values, legalising prostitution would do much to destroy the moral fibre that is so desperately needed in our country today," he said.

Provincial deputy chairperson of the Congress of the People (Cope), John Nkuna, said Cope was opposed to legalising prostitution during the World Cup.

"We cannot be seen as supporting any illegal act. Cope will defend the Constitution of this country, whatever it takes," he said.

Executive board member for the Southern Africa Network against Trafficking and Abuse of Children (SANTAC), Vusi Ndukuya, called for authorities to be sensitive about human trafficking, child pornography and prostitution.

Aids.. That is reason enough not to do it. I have seen figures suggesting 50%+ HIV rate among prostitutes. If people want to risk their lives, thats their thing, but if we want to make money out of them IGNORANTLY risking their lives while we pretend not to know the extent of the dangers, we might aswell be selling tickets to a door that leads to a 10 story drop, and be advertising it as something else.

They'll be going to the prossies no matter what. Where do you think the punters are more likely to wear a condom? In a nice warm comfy brothel with the Madam breathing over their shoulders, or out in an alley behind a dustbin?

Also, it's far easier to keep tabs on human trafficking if you know where all your prossies are.

And best of all, if you legalise prostitution you can TAX the prossies too!

Oh, I agree with legalizing prostitution, there are many benefits IMO. BUT to do it specifically AIMED AT ignorant foreigners.. thats knowingly taking advantage of ignorance. The risks here, dwarf any risks in their own countries x 100. And ofcourse, if we are concentrating on the money to be made, we will not do something as counter productive as informing customers who very well may decide against taking that risk, because we have informed them.
 
In fact you have more problem with prostitution be illagel than if it was legal if you ask me.

You could setup monthly STD testing and anyone found with an STD could be banned from working and jailed if found working.
 
I think the health system needs to be fixed way before anything like legalising prostitution can be done
We already have such a high aids rate... imagine a new disease emerging from aids and flu's... or what ever else is brought along...
This country is a already a killing field... and life expectancy is between 45-55... or hasn't anyone noticed?

If the health system is not fixed soon... we can have another pandemic
Rather... why can't these pricks just keep their balls 'n all in their pants...:D it's not that long anyway...
Besides... you might just live to tell your grandkids about 2010 oneday :) ... or is it just my opinion :confused:
 
Well nothing is stopping aids and people still go hookers, go look in the citizen, they have a whole page of hooker ads. Not exactly like it is well policed.

They might aswell make it legal.It's pretty much there already.You want to sleep with a hooker and get aids?Not my problem.
 
Rat you know one night stands run the same risks right? I would say AIDS is spread just as much from that one off night with some random chick/guy and you think its safe because she/he is not a hooker.

Obviously going to hookers has risks but so does random sex with random people.

As far as I can tell, they are only talking about legalizing it for the duration of the world cup. After that its illegal again? Does that even make sense to anyone? Its illegal, because its "bad", unless there is alot of money to be made at the expense of people, then its not "bad" anymore, but when the cash cows leave, its "bad" again? :rolleyes:

I totally agree with you... if its ok... its ok... but if its wrong ... then its wrong :rolleyes:

Typical of the thinking of our law-makers... I hope they all get infected... die... and then we can get decent law-makers :D
 
Well they may as well legalize drugs then as well because we have some pretty good shyte in this country that the rest of world could give a shot :p

Benadie is openly admitting that the current HIV awareness programmes and those that address other sexually transmitted diseases are inadequate.
Fire those responsible.

Yes, legalise it. Don't sit in the corner pretending that prostitution is dead while the "police" milk the prozzies instead of doing their jobs. Oh, and hurry up, if you want to do this properly, you have to start 4 years ago.
 
Legalize it, tax the crap out of it - setup vendors inside to sell popcorn and coke and to rape the consumer , pretty much like when going to the movie house.
 
i drive down oxford in rosebank every night, and its fulled with prositiutes. The one evening i stopped at the robot and bent down to pic up my glasses which rolled onto the passenger seat, i come up, and what do i see this freaken h0 staring at me with her face against my window, i almost shat in my pants, that stuff is just totally freaky, so i make sure i speed down that road.

they always ask you "hullo bebeh, you want some black punnnaniii..." *pukes* ( for the prositutes ) <-- just incase you left wingest anc'ers come calling me a racist:P

no man its not funny, its scary go drive down that street at around 9ish / 10 and you will see what i mean.. there is usually about 4/5 on a corner every corner so like 30 in that street alone. The other night a cop stopped in front of me. lol you see them scatter its funny.
