I've been thinking of getting either a Samsung 2333SW or Samsung 2494HS.

I'm thinking of the 2494HS because it has a HDMI port so there's always the option of plugging DVD players etc into it but I've also read about converters but how well do they work, any downside to using a converter instead of getting a monitor that has HDMI.

About the gaming I'm wondering about a few things, like how do older games look that only support lower resolutions, are they stretched, are there black bars on the sides, does it look strange or bad?

What about when the graphics card doesn't have the performance to run newer games at 1920x meaning I'll have to drop the resolution, will things start looking strange or bad. Since these things upscale what resolutions under 1920x would or should work well presuming some don't work to well?
 
There is no disadvantage with using an HDMI adapter on the DVI port of the 2333SW. The image on some old games will look stretched and out of ratio because of the extra pixels on the screen and aspect ratio.
 
I have the Samsung 2333SW... the best thing to happen to me (apart from the rest of my pc).
The HDMI port is only useful for dvd players and so on, as you said.
It's native resolution is 1920x1080, but it downlscales nicely to 1680x1050 without any funny-looking crap. Really useful if your graphics card can't handle that mammoth resolution.
 
So any (old) games which don't support wide screen end up being stretched instead of having back sections on the side? Do any monitors let you choose stretch or have bars, because I'd rather have the bars than have everything wonky lol.

Well by the sound of it then, since the HDMI on the 2494HS doesn't seem to be an advantage the 2333SW is the better buy. Any idea how much would one of these converters cost though, and were to get one?
 
Don't live in a city lol, closest would be PE, any online stores?
 
Quite blank on where you could get one in your area, HDCabling.co.za has one for R63 but I'm not sure how much delivery would be.
 
Thanks DJNgoma, would you give a link to this thing, incase I end up getting the wrong thing lol. I've never looked into any of this before because I've been quite happy with my CRT monitor for ages.

LCD monitors support scaling, as do newer gfx drivers. You can choose "no scaling" (which should keep the original resolution, which may wind using a 1/4 of the screen), or "fixed aspect ratio" (the image is resized as much as it will go without distorting, leaving black bars), or "use LCD screen's scaling" (where the image is stretched over the screen and often distorted).

my 2333sw came with the dvi - hdmi converter ? nope sorry - i remember now - my xfx gtx 280 came with the converter !!!

if u live close to PE check out pc-zones online store!
the only thing i fine attractive about the 2494HS is 1920x1080 @ 85hz but its ass ugly i have the 2333sw and its so pretty :D
and at pc-zones u can get the 2494HS for R2199 i guess you could get the 2333sw there for sub that.

Has anyone bought anything from pczone, their site doesn't exactly inspire confidence. It's literally nothing but a bunch of pictures with prices and no real useful information. I wouldn't be comfortable buying anything from them unless it was face to face.
 
Most people here seem to only have the 2333, and I'm sure it's a great monitor but isn't the 2494HS better? It has a higher contrast ratio, and it's displaying the same resolution over a larger screen, is this better or worse?

That is why there site is the way it is, you can only buy from them face to face. They're simply advertising their prices to irritate people who aren't in Durban and can't get those prices. :(

Hmm, I'm still wondering about this, my graphics card can't handle the new games at 1680x with high detail (and that will only get worse as time goes by).

Does anyone know how these two monitors work with games running in about +-1280x* range ?

I want a nice new LCD but really don't want to end up regretting it when it comes to games and I'm not willing to pay a fortune for oversized power hungry monster graphics cards.
