Hey peeps.... firstly WASUP!!! A few days ago I called Telkom to enquire about getting ADSL at my new offices in blackheath!! The operator told me ADSL access isnt available in my area. I think its due to the bad copper lines..

Now im totaly screwed.... i live on the net... what can i do? Is wireless OR any other form of 24/7 net access available in the Blackheath area - Cape Town.

..... does Telkom offer a 56k 24h line??? Cuz we have phones lines .. so that should work...

Blackheath area code 7581

Is it a hopeless case??

any help much appreciated...

check the iburst map to see if you're covered. If you think you might be covered, try arrange a signal test
http://www.iburst.co.za/rolloutpics/consol_coverage/capetown_consolidated.htm

Anything is better than nothing. You could also try sentech but their online coverage is totally wrong. Use the following link to check if you're within 6km from a tower.
http://www.rational.co.za/Mywireless/calculate.html
Even if you're 7.5km away, get a signal test done. I've tested a client who was 7.2km from the tower and he could connect with 15% using a pringles can.

Just a quick question, and I know this isn't definitive, but lets speculate anyways.
To confirm whether or not your exchange is ADSL enabled please click here. (http://www.telkom.co.za/adsl/)What does that Telkom util on their site say about your exchange?

<ps text="was unable to get the URL from a View Source in IE; also that adsl page doesn't seem to support FireFox."/>

I've had telkom phone me twice with "do you know about our dsl products" and according to their site, the exchange I am using is setup and working.
"Your exchange supports ADSL. If you wish to place an order, click here"

When they tested my line, the test failed. A friend of mine is 1.5km away and he had adsl installed without any problems. What makes you think crappy wiring plays a big role. No wonder I couldnt connect above 40kbps with my other modem. Oh, and Im within 4.5km of the exchange (much shorter if you take the direct point to point distance)

You could try the Surfmore thing - but I am not sure how much that costs for 24/7

Ok zoopedup.com, that is sad, but then you are dealing with Telskum- it is now only the begining of 2005 & Telskum says not for at least another year - truly pathetic IMO.

If wireless isn't available now, keep an eye on www.iburst.co.za - you might be lucky in the next few months.

Also, seeing as you definitely have an axe to grind with Telskum, are you aware that ICASA wants you to tell them what is wrong with Telkom's ADSL? If you don't know, click on the URGENT in my signature - it is all there & you have until this Friday morning to do it.

Hi ZD.com,

In case you want to know what it was all about read RPM's initial announcement, and then read RPM's advice as well.

Have you found a temporary solution to your dilema?
